Cybersafety Tips

Is your child spending more time with their iPads than their friends over the school holidays?

Kids use the internet a lot more during the school holidays, meaning they have more chance of being exposed to cyber security threats. But you don't have to panic, get scared, or throw away their device. The best thing to do is to start a simple conversation. To make your child’s online experience positive and safe, here’s some helpful suggestions from Grok Academy's expert educators:

  1. “Lots of kids use avatars instead of photos, do you have an avatar already or can we make one together?"
  2. “What nickname do you use instead of your real name?”
  3. “You know it’s important to keep your personal details private like name, address, location, even your school can be risky.”
  4. “Before you click on anything do you check the source?"
  5. "If they’re not a trusted friend or family don’t click!”
  6. “If a stranger tries to friend you online, what would you do?"

And remember, let your child know they can talk to you, even if they’ve clicked on the wrong pop-up. By discussing their online experiences, you can empower them to have fun but also make safe decisions online.
