Senior Girls House Update

The Senior Girls have had a fantastic start to 2025! With a full house, everyone has settled in well, and the new Year 8s have brought great energy and enthusiasm to the house.

The Girls have enjoyed a range of activities, including connecting with the community at the MITS Family Day at Rick and Liz’s farm, attending the St Kilda Festival, exploring the Kusama Exhibition at the NGV, and watching a Movie Under the Stars.

Our optional afternoon activity program is in full swing, with baking, arts, and crafts continuing to be popular. Eight Girls are still competing in the summer basketball season, and preseason footy training has begun this week.

We also welcomed back the A-Team Tutors last week, and it’s been fantastic to see such strong attendance at our study sessions.

Everyone is looking forward to a fun and rewarding term ahead!

Senior Fellas House Update

We commenced the year with the arrival of 11 new Year 8 students and there is a positive vibe surrounding our fellas.  Welcome to Gregory who is starting his first year at MITS.

This week we have commenced family check-ins and look forward to discussing and sharing with you all the start your son has had in 2025 and hearing our thoughts and feedback.

The focus for this term is meeting expectations and the fellas have had a great start taking responsibility over their locations, signing in and out, keeping their rooms tidy and getting themselves off to school.

We have enjoyed many fun activities including surfing, basketball and most recently the MITS Family BBQ.  The 364 lounge has transformed into a music room with Yidakis, electric guitars and an electric drum kit that occupies much of our boarding time.  Table tennis has become a regular feature as a part of after school activities.

Study sessions are scheduled each Monday and Wednesday and the fellas have started strong.  The expectation to participate aides in creating good habits.  Students are supported by The A Team,  Rei and some of MITS's dedicated volunteers.

The 364 student leadership team consists of Des, Zaya, Malakai and Waylon.  The fellas are demonstrating the MITS Values in everything the do and are positive role models for the younger students in the house.  Special mention to Waylon who has been named 364 House Captain.

Year 7 Boarding Update

A great start to the Year for our new cohort in Year 7. A small trip to Darwin at the start of Term for orientation allowed for our NT students to get to know each other and become instant friends. Arriving in Melbourne, they were welcomed by our 3 Victorian students, and all are creating a strong peer group.

The first weekend activity saw some future surfing stars in the Year 7s with most of the group participating and learning to surf in the Victorian Indigenous Surfing Titles. Slightly cooler waters than our NT students are used to! A quick visit into the CBD, where students learned about some of the city's sights and catching public transport was had as well.

Our second weekend involved another trip down the coast to Rick & Liz's farm for the annual MITS Family BBQ. Students were able to engage with their older peers, have a try at cricket or tennis and meet the donkeys on the farm. Students also visited St Kilda Music Festival which had a First Nations theme on the day of attendance - students enjoyed making boomerangs, jewelry and participating in a soccer match.

Throughout the week after school, we have visited the pool, all the local parks, been shooting hoops at St Kevin's as well as getting a good homework routine set up and engaging in some craft and art activities.

We look forward to offering students further engagements in Year 7 boarding including visits to muesums, a sailing and beach day, an amusement park called Luna Park, exploring some of Victoria's forests and time on country, overnight camps, saturday night Student Chef programs, a safari bus at the Zoo and some bike riding!
