CEO's Welcome

A very warm welcome to our MITS families as we start the 2025 school year.  To our new families: we are delighted to have your young people with us at MITS, and to have you as part of our broad MITS family.  We look forward to working alongside you.  To our continuing families, we are so pleased to welcome you and your young people back to MITS for another year of learning and growth on Wurundjeri Country.

In 2025 we have 85 students living with MITS from Year 7 to Year 12, with another 5 students living in Pathways School Boarding Houses or in host families.  We have 46 students across Year 7 and Year 8, and in Year 7 we have welcomed students and families from Bairnsdale and Swan Hill Victoria, and Barunga, Darwin, Elliott, Jabiru, Nganmarriyanga, Ngukurr, Palmerston, Pirlangimpi, Ramingining, Tennant Creek and Vanderlin Island in the Northern Territory.

I’m delighted to share the appointment of our two MITS Captains for 2024: Leah Baird (who is currently in Year 12 at Camberwell Girls’ Grammar) and Lesharnie Hall (in Year 12 at Kingswood College).  In addition, we have appointed a Senior Fellas Boarding Captain for 2024: Waylon Huddleston (currently in Year 10 at St Kevin’s College.)

Year 7-8 Captains

On Wednesday we announced our Year 7 and Year 8 captains: in Year 7, Jarlan Kelly and Mya Priest, and in Year 8, Jaydah Hood and Drae Daly (see left).

The appointments emphasise the importance of student leadership at MITS to provide guidance, mentoring, support and role modelling, and also highlight the depth of talent that we enjoy in our MITS student cohort.  This year, you will hear from our captains in this newsletter and at major MITS events during the year: their voices and perspectives guide us and ensure accountability in all that we do.

While our students were home for the summer break plenty of work continued on Richmond Hill.  We completed significant upgrades to Lockington, with new air conditioning to all bedrooms, a new breakfast servery in the dining room and refreshed study areas in both living rooms.  We also started renovation works at 283 Church Street, our new classroom spaces, which will be completed by the start of Term 2.  And, our Teaching Team moved our classrooms temporarily to Trinity Grammar School, where Term 1 classes are taking place while we complete the renovations to 283.

We are excited to work through 2025 to support our students to grab the opportunities of MITS and of Melbourne while living our values of Respect, Courage, Culture and Care.
