English - Exploring Mentor Texts

Our teaching teams have recently shared Learning Itineraries with families, outlining the first Big Idea students will be exploring, along with the mentor texts that will support this inquiry.

mentor text is any text that serves as a strong example of a reading or writing strategy we are teaching. These texts help students recognise the techniques that skilled readers and writers use. For instance, our Foundation students will be reading All Are Welcome. This book was selected as a mentor text because it connects to their first Big Idea, We are a community, and will help students explore key English concepts like making connections and using both visuals and words to understand a text.

Selecting the right mentor texts involves thoughtful planning. Teachers not only ensure the texts align with our Big Ideas and the English curriculum, but they also strive to include a variety of text types, such as novels, picture books, films, podcasts, songs, and informational texts.

You can see which mentor texts your child is currently engaging with by reviewing the Learning Itinerary sent home by their teacher. Reading these texts together or discussing them at home is a wonderful way to support your child’s learning and strengthen the connection between school and home.
