From the Principal Team

To students and families,

Thank you, farewell and welcome!

On behalf of all of Mornington Secondary College, we would like to thank our Acting Principal, Lisa Holt, for stepping in to support our school during Term 2. Lisa has had an impact on all of us in some way, sometimes big, sometimes small, and we look forward to continuing a professional relationship with Lisa in the future and continuing to build on our professional connections.

Upon our return after the mid year break, we will welcome (or is it welcome back) our new Principal, Adam Slater, and we eagerly look forward to continued growth and improvement as he leads Mornington Secondary College. We know how proud Adam is to be serving this community and look forward to working with him from Term 3 onwards.

A Well-Earned Break

As we reach the end of Semester One, it is worth taking a moment to acknowledge just how much our senior students have accomplished over the past term.

For many students, the past few weeks have been particularly demanding. Year 10 students have been completing examinations and beginning to think about future pathways. VCE students have navigated SACs, coursework deadlines, the GAT and the ongoing demands of their studies, while our VM students have been working through a range of practical projects and assessment tasks while also sitting their final VCE assessment in the GAT. Many students have also participated in Structured Workplace Learning placements, VET programs, camps, excursions, sporting events and a range of co-curricular opportunities.

Beyond the classroom, our Year 12 students recently enjoyed their Formal, a significant milestone in their final year of secondary school and an opportunity to celebrate friendships and memories that will last well beyond graduation. In addition, many students have been busy with interschool sport, camps, and our Year 10s have been on visits to Holmesglen TAFE and Monash University.

When schools are busy, it can sometimes be easy to focus only on what is next. However, learning is not a sprint. Just as athletes need recovery between training sessions, students need opportunities to rest, recharge and reset. The upcoming holiday break provides exactly that opportunity.

For students, the challenge is often finding the balance between taking a well-earned break and maintaining momentum. The most successful students are rarely those who spend every day of the holidays studying. Instead, they are the students who return ready to learn because they have looked after both their wellbeing and their routines.

Some simple ways our students can strike this balance include:

  • Maintaining a consistent sleep routine.
  • Spending time with family and friends.
  • Staying active through sport, exercise or outdoor activities.
  • Reading regularly, whether for enjoyment or learning.
  • Completing small amounts of preparation for Semester Two rather than leaving everything until the final weekend of the holidays (spending the final Saturday or Sunday madly doing work does not usually result in students feeling refreshed on day one of Term 3!).
  • Taking time to reflect on what went well during Semester One and identifying one or two goals for the term ahead.

The aim is not to turn the holidays into another school term. The aim is to return refreshed, healthy and ready to make the most of the opportunities that Semester Two will bring.

Thank you to our students, staff and families for their support throughout a busy and successful semester. We wish everyone a safe, enjoyable and restful holiday period and look forward to welcoming students back for another exciting semester of learning and growth.

Study Tip of the Week: Consistency beats intensity. One hour daily is greater than six hours once a week.

Staying Safe on Bikes and E-Scooters Over the Holidays

As we head into the school holidays, many young people will be spending more time out and about with friends, travelling on bikes and e-scooters. While these are great ways to get around, they also come with important responsibilities.

There have been several recent near misses in our local community involving riders and vehicles. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, but these incidents remind us that safe and responsible riding is essential.

One of the challenges of adolescence is that young people are naturally inclined to take risks. It is a normal part of growing up and developing independence. However, this can sometimes lead to a feeling of being invincible or believing that accidents happen to other people. The reality is that it only takes a momentary lapse in concentration or a poor decision for someone to be seriously injured.

We encourage all students to wear a properly fitted helmet every time they ride, remain alert to their surroundings, and follow all road and pathway rules. Riders should avoid distractions such as mobile phones, be mindful of pedestrians, and ride at a safe speed appropriate to the environment.

Parents are encouraged to take the opportunity over the break to discuss safe riding habits with their children and ensure that bikes and e-scooters are in good working order. Simple checks of brakes, tyres, lights and helmets can make a significant difference to safety.

When students return to school next term, we want everyone to arrive safely and continue to be positive ambassadors for our community. By making sensible choices, thinking ahead, and showing consideration for others, we can all help prevent accidents and ensure that our roads and pathways remain safe for everyone.

Semester Reports Available Friday

Semester reports will be available to families via Compass from 9:00am on Friday 26th June.

Reports provide an important snapshot of student progress and achievement across Semester 1. For students in Years 7–10, reports indicate achievement against the Victorian Curriculum standards. For students undertaking VCE studies, reports provide information regarding progress towards VCE outcomes and course requirements.

We encourage families to take the time to review reports together and celebrate the learning, growth and achievements that have occurred throughout the semester.

This semester, we have introduced a new feature to our reports. At the bottom of each subject report, families will see any awards that have been earned by students in that subject.

Endeavour Award – Presented to students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to their learning through consistent effort, persistence, positive engagement and a willingness to improve.

Excellence Award – Presented to students who have achieved a high standard of academic performance and demonstrated excellence in their learning.

These awards recognise both the effort students invest in their learning and the outcomes they achieve. We congratulate all students who have earned an Endeavour or Excellence Award and thank our families for their ongoing support throughout the semester.

As we move into Semester 2, reports also provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their progress and set goals for continued success in the months ahead.

Kind Regards

Music Performance Evening

On Thursday 18th June, our Music Department proudly presented its first dedicated Music Performance Evening for the year. Students performed to an enthusiastic audience of family, friends and staff, showcasing the hard work and dedication they have shown throughout the semester.

The evening featured performances from a number of our school ensembles as well as solo performers, with many students taking to the stage for the very first time! It was wonderful to see students growing in confidence and sharing their musical talents with the school community.

We look forward to our next performance evening on Thursday the 10th of September. If any student or student-run ensembles are interested in performing in our next concert please see Mr T in the Performing Arts Office at the beginning of Term 3.

My piece is about my favourite thing to do on horseback; show jumping. I love the feeling of soaring over jumps on my favourite animals! It was a challenging piece but I got it finished and I am very happy with it. First I made the base out of wire and tape and then put paper mache over it. I painted it and made jumps out of tape and rolled up paper, then I glued it all to the block of wood! - Amy T, Year 8

Year 12OES Snow Camp

The Year 12 Outdoor and Environmental Studies classes of Mick Williams and Madison Nicholls recently travelled to Mount Buller for their annual Snow Camp, and what a fantastic experience it was!

Despite a slower start to the snow season than in previous years, our students made the most of every opportunity on the mountain. Over just two days, we witnessed incredible progression from all students, particularly our beginner skiers, some of whom were making even the teachers look slow by the end of the trip!

Our snowboarders were equally impressive, constantly seeking new challenges and adventures. After mastering Bourke Street, many students pushed themselves further, practising 180s, board grabs, and other new tricks.

Most importantly, the students represented the school exceptionally well. Their enthusiasm, determination, positive attitude, and willingness to challenge themselves made this one of the most enjoyable camps we have experienced. We could not have asked for a better group of students, and they have certainly set a high standard for future Outdoor and Environmental Studies classes.

A massive thank you must go to our incredible camp staff – Grant Olarenshaw, Viv Collins and Chris Jones. Your ongoing support, encouragement, patience, and ability to help students continue progressing after their lessons is invaluable. The positive relationships you build with students and the energy you bring to the mountain play a huge role in making the camp such a success.

It was also fantastic to see that we may have some future skiers and snowboarders among us. Beyond the learning outcomes of the camp, it is always rewarding to see students discover a new passion and embrace the challenge of the alpine environment. While we may have introduced them to a rather expensive hobby, we love seeing students develop a lifelong appreciation for the snow. The snow season is there to be explored, challenged, and enjoyed, and many of our students certainly did exactly that.

Well done to everyone involved in another memorable Mount Buller camp!

Excursions

Year 11 PE Visit to ACU for vo2max Testing

Recently, our Year 11 Physical Education class had the exciting opportunity to visit the Australian Catholic University (ACU) Sports Lab. The excursion provided students with a valuable insight into the practical side of exercise science and allowed us to see how many of the concepts studied in VCE Physical Education are applied in real-world settings.

The day began with a crash course in VCE PE theory delivered by ACU staff. Students explored key concepts relating to energy systems, fitness components, physiological adaptations and performance testing. This provided a great introduction to the scientific methods used to assess athletic performance and health.

The highlight of the visit was observing a VO₂ max test; one of the most respected measures of aerobic fitness. VO₂ max refers to the maximum amount of oxygen an individual can take in, transport and utilise during intense exercise. During the test, participants exercised on a treadmill while wearing a specialised mask that measured the volume of oxygen being consumed and carbon dioxide being produced. The exercise intensity gradually increased until the participant reached voluntary exhaustion.

A VO₂ max test measures the efficiency of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in supplying oxygen to working muscles and is often used by athletes and sports scientists to assess endurance performance. Higher VO₂ max values generally indicate a greater capacity to sustain aerobic exercise and perform prolonged physical activity.

A special congratulations goes to Baylin Wilcox, Bailey Barrett and Ellana Borthwick, who volunteered to complete the maximal fitness test. Reaching the end of a VO₂ max assessment requires determination, resilience and a willingness to push beyond comfort levels. All three students represented the class exceptionally well and demonstrated outstanding effort throughout the testing process.

During the Cyber Security session, students had the opportunity to work hands-on with industry-standard computer programs, explore emerging technologies, and gain a deeper understanding of how artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping the future of work and communication. Through a series of interactive activities, students learned about online security, ethical hacking, and how cyber professionals identify and respond to potential threats. A highlight of the session was participating in simulated hacking challenges, where students worked together to test their problem-solving skills and experience real-world cyber security concepts in a safe learning environment.

The Sports Presentation workshop provided students with an insight into the fast-paced world of sports media and communications. Students explored how sporting events are presented to audiences and gained an understanding of the skills required to work behind the scenes in the sports industry.

Throughout the day, Holmesglen staff shared information about the wide range of study pathways available after secondary school, including vocational education and higher education opportunities. Students learned about courses such as the Bachelor of Sports Media, Bachelor of Sport Business, and a variety of diploma programs across areas including business, sport, technology, health, and trades. These presentations helped students gain a clearer understanding of potential career pathways and the qualifications required to achieve their goals.

Students also participated in a fun campus scavenger hunt, encouraging them to explore the facilities and student spaces. Congratulations to the winning teams, who received desk phone holders as prizes.

Interschool Sport

Senior Sport

Our Senior Girls AFL team recently competed against three other schools in a day filled with great football, strong competition, and plenty of laughs.

A special thank you goes to Annabelle Cox, Holly Waugh, and Jeannie Brenton for helping to organise and lead a strong team throughout the day. We are also incredibly grateful to our Year 10 students (Tommie-Lee Kuhl, Kaitlyn Cocks, Ellie Smith, and Lucie Gregorio) who stepped up at short notice to help fill our squad and represent the school.

The team showed tremendous determination across all matches. Our defence was particularly impressive, with Jessica Gyorosi and Kaitlyn Cocks standing strong against some tough opposition and consistently holding the line. Rhiannon Rollo was a powerful presence around the ground, applying excellent pressure and laying some outstanding tackles throughout the day.

Annabelle Cox and Jeannie Brenton led by example, applying relentless pressure, driving the team forward, and helping make important adjustments as the competition progressed. Holly Waugh also created some exciting opportunities in the forward line and worked tirelessly to keep our attack moving.

Every single player brought something valuable to the day and we want to acknowledge the effort, teamwork, and positive attitude shown by all involved. While the results did not quite fall our way this year, the girls represented the school with pride and should be extremely proud of their efforts.

A big thank you also goes to AFL Trainee Amelia Vecchi for assisting on the day and supporting the team throughout the competition.

On Monday our two Senior Boys Netball teams competed at the District Championships. The Year 12 Team were excited for their last ever opportunity to play for MSC and were strong competitors. Playing with speed and determination, they won two out of their four matches, finishing third overall. Our Year 11 Team played better as the day went on, working together as a team and learning some of the more intricate rules of netball with each game played. They managed one win for the day, also finishing in third place. It was a great day out for all involved, well done boys!

A big thankyou to the three Year 9 boys who I plucked out of Period 1 to fill the places of students who did not attend. Also a big shout out to Lacey & Lucinda who coached, with Taylah and Harley assisting, and Georgia for scoring.

On Tuesday 23rd June it was our Intermediate Girls Netball teams turn to take on our local schools.

Our A Team, coached by Lacey, started the day strongly and won their first three games by an average of 30 goals. After the lunch break they faced some tough competition from Dromana, but pulled away in the final quarter to win by 4 goals. They finished the day with 5/5 wins and move on to SMR.

Our B Team, coached by Ella, faced their toughest competition first up, going down to Dromana. They rallied after their loss and went on to win the rest of their games to finish 2nd out of the five schools in their competition.

The girls represented MSC with pride and excellent sportsmanship. Thankyou to Claire for coming along and scoring on the day and to Shine for helping with all the juggling.

The Southern Peninsula Division (SPD) Intermediate Badminton Championships were held on Tuesday 23rd June at our stadium. It was a massive competition with nine boys teams and eight girls teams representing their schools. Both the girls and boys competitions were divided into two pools with the winner of the pools playing against each other in the final.

Our Intermediate Girls Badminton A Team got off to a great start winning their opening match against Dromana 4 – 2. The girl’s continued their impressive game play winning against both Dromana C and Somerville B teams to win their pool undefeated. The other pool was won by Mt Eliza defeating Mornington B, Somerville A and Dromana B teams. This set up a very evenly balanced final between Mornington A team and Mt Eliza.

After the girl’s played their four singles matches, the game count was even at two singles game wins per team. It was then up to the two doubles games to determine the girl’s competition winner. The doubles matches were also very evenly balanced with both teams winning one each. This left both teams with three game wins each. To determine a winner the team with the highest combined points score across all six games would be used. The final points count was Mornington 73 and Mt Eliza 61. Our Mornington A girls team were awarded the Intermediate SPD pennant and will progress on to represent our SPD at the Southern Metropolitan Regional Finals to be held in July at Clyde.

A fantastic result for the school, congratulations and good luck to the girls at the SMR finals.

Our Boys Intermediate Badminton Team also got off to a flying start in their competition winning their opening match 6-0 against Dromana A. The boys followed a similar path to the girls winning their pool defeating Mt Eliza B, Rosebud and Somerville B. The other boys pool was won by Mt Eliza defeating Dromana B, Somerville A and Western Port, which set up another Mornington v Mt Eliza final.

Our boys played exceptionally well with some close games, but Mt Eliza just had a little more fire power to secure the win. Congratulations to our boys placing second in the competition.

The Intermediate Boys Soccer Team competed against four strong Mornington Peninsula schools this week. Despite being short on players due to illness and injury, our eleven boys who took the field played every minute of all four matches, showing outstanding determination and teamwork.

The team got off to a great start against Somerville, securing a 2–0 victory. Nic Tihala sealed the win with a well-taken penalty kick as the final whistle approached.

In the second match, the boys faced a strong Dromana side. Despite a spirited effort, Dromana's larger squad and fresh legs proved difficult to overcome.

After the break, MSC were involved in one of the most exciting matches of the day against Rosebud. Every time MSC found the back of the net, Rosebud responded, leaving the scores locked at 4–4 with less than a minute remaining. Luca Keisoglu then produced a memorable moment, finishing off a brilliant attacking move to score the winning goal and spark jubilant celebrations led by Luca and followed by the rest of the team.

The final game against Mt Eliza came shortly after. After three highly competitive matches, fatigue began to take its toll. The boys battled hard until the end, but Mt Eliza eventually came away with the win.

The team demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout the day, remaining competitive in every match despite having no substitutes. Their effort, sportsmanship, and determination were a credit to MSC and made the school proud. Hopefully everyone slept well on Tuesday night!

We started our Intermediate Boys Football pool games against Rosebud and Western Port, who we beat easily. That ultimately put us in the final against Dromana, who were always going to be our biggest challenge. We didn’t start well and were down by 3 goals at half time. In a brilliant display of commitment and heart we came back to win by 1 point, with the ball camped in their forward line for the last 2 minutes, making us the winners on the day. We now move on to SMR on the 30th July.

Year 12 VM - Speak & Share

On Tuesday 23rd June, Mornington Secondary College was excited to welcome the founders of Speak & Share, Ben and Mason, to speak with our Vocational Major (VM) students. The visit gave students the opportunity to hear directly from the founders about the purpose of the charity, the impact it has on the community, and the importance of creating positive change through action.

Our VM students selected this charity to support as part of their Community Project Market Day, which will be held on Thursday 27th August. Students have begun planning their fundraising ideas, designing activities, and preparing stalls to raise money and awareness for their chosen causes. The Speak & Share founders shared valuable insights into how small actions can create a big difference and encouraged students to use their creativity, teamwork and leadership skills to make their community project successful.

We look forward to seeing the students’ hard work come together at the Market Day and celebrating the positive impact they will make within our community. Thank you to the founders of Speak & Share for inspiring our students and supporting their community journey.

Year 9 Advanced Maths

This week students collected and analysed data on their own height and pinkie finger length. After gathering the class data, students presented their findings using stem-and-leaf plots or histograms. Through their analysis, they discovered that there was no correlation between a person's height and the length of their pinkie finger. Students also observed that pinkie finger length showed much less variation across the group than height, demonstrating how data displays can be used to identify patterns, relationships, and variability within a dataset.
