News from the Library

Wow, Matilda has hit the ground running, and everyone is saying it is amazing! The Library staff are excited to see it – every year they seem to set the bar higher. If you love musicals we have a range of books on display – why not get to know the stories before you see them on stage or screen. They include:

The Odyssey - The Odyssey is an ancient poem about violence and the aftermath of war; about wealth, poverty and power; about marriage and family; about travellers, hospitality, and the yearning for home. There are several versions available to borrow, including the translation by Emily Wilson, and Gareth Hinds graphic novel.

Books by Roald Dahl – Matilda is not the only Roald Dahl book to get the musical treatment. Others include Fantastic Mr Fox, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and The Witches.

Oliver! – based on the Charles Dickens book Oliver Twist, in 1830’s London Oliver Twist must use all his wits to stay out of the clutches of a gang on pickpockets, thieves and murderers.

Reading at home

There is a wealth of articles out there that will tell you that developing a love of reading will provide enormous benefits to you over your lifetime. Though this is true, many articles fail to provide strategies to assist with fitting reading into your daily lives. Unless an intentional reading habit is created, it is all too easy to not pick up your book for days or weeks (or months!) at a time.

Take a quick look at your week and try to find regular times in it to devote to reading – it could mean going to bed 15 minutes earlier and reading before sleep, carving out some time before your day fully starts and use your reading time as a mindfulness exercise (maybe the whole family could join in), or listening to an audiobook on your commute or while washing up after dinner.

I subscribe to my local library’s digital collection and have a book on my phone for those random 10 minutes when I’m in a holding pattern somewhere. The more you work a reading habit into your life, the easier it is finding the time to devote to it. Why not give it a try?
