Year 9 Toys in the Community

Creating Futures Together

Year 9 ‘Toys in the community’ excursion to Cumberland Aged Care facility

On Tuesday the 13th of August, the students of the ‘Toys in the Community’ class presented their projects consisting of a range of toys that the students had designed and made, to the Cumberland Aged Care community. The toys were designed and made in groups addressing ‘Design Thinking’ strategies to engage participants in that community. Aspects such as empathy, ideation, production and evaluating the product, were applied to this project.

The students then presented their toys and supporting ideas to the community. To see students engaging with elderly people for nearly two hours, playing the games they have designed and made was a great event to see. The toys were made in multiples, giving every participant an opportunity to try differing toys. Some members of the aged care community suggested that the toys should be patented showing their respect for the student’s ideas and products. The students engaged 100% in the activity with the community, a humbling moment for all teachers on the excursion. They represented their school in the most respectful manner.

A great effort by the students of the ‘Toys in the Community’ class, that will not be forgotten by the aged care participants and management, who engaged with the students. Well done, and respect to the class for an amazing, engaging session with the local aged care community!
