Understanding Action Team

Last week, students who are a part of the Understanding Action Team were visited by Alex Brignell, a Disability Inclusion Advisor for the City of Casey.  Alex presented an interactive and informative presentation about what disabilities are and the different types of disabilities that exist in our communities.

Students asked Alex a broad range of questions which all students develop a richer understanding about what life is like to live with a disability in our community.

LS3 Seniors Excursion to the Immigration Museum

This Monday, LS3 Seniors, went on an excursion to the Immigration Museum in the city and we travelled by train. In the museum, we saw three different rooms: “Leaving Home,” “Voices Across Time,” and “Getting In”. My favourite room was “Getting In” because we got to pretend we were in an interview scenario, interviewing people trying to migrate to Australia.

The next room we visited was “Leaving Home,” where we watched a video explaining why people left their homes and had to migrate to Australia. Finally, we went to “Voices Across Time”, which provided information about how people felt and their stories on why they left to migrate to Australia. ( Matilda)

Sandridge Bridge - Screens

(Christo and Ayrkiera)

Another experience we had on our excursion was walking across the “Sandridge Bridge”. Sandridge Bridge is a historic bridge that initially carried railway lines over the Yarra River in Melbourne while Flinders Street Station was being built and is now a pedestrian-style path. It has migration screens and amazing sculptures.

On each screen, there is a country with their migration story to Australia. Each display shows how many people migrated, the languages they spoke, the reason why they came to Australia and the dates of their migration.

We found out that there are many different reasons why people came to Australia, which includes convicts, refugees miners and for education. We completed a Venn diagram to compare two counties' stories to help us look closer and compare this information.

Sandridge Bridge: Sculptures

(Rithvik and Siona)

The bridge was enormous and featured colossal metal sculptures. These sculptures were highly detailed, with elements like fans and beams of metal visible within them. The sculptures depicted the history of migration to Australia, conveying the rich and complex stories of those who journeyed there.

What are the names of the sculptures on the Sandridge Bridge?

The figures were in graphic and abstract in form, and their names are Gayip (Aboriginal period); First Settler (convict period); Melbourne Beauty (gold rushes); Walker and His Tucker Bag (assisted migration); Shelter (displaced persons); Urban Wheel (European migration); Running Couple (refugees); Butterfly Girl (Asian and Middle Eastern).

What was your favourite sculpture and why?

Our favourite sculpture was the Butterfly Girl, which is significant to us as we both have Asian (Indian) heritage and that sculpture celebrated Asian and Middle Eastern migration. It was fascinating to see the history of our heritage and its migration to Australia represented in the artwork.

SPORTING SCHOOLS – VOLLEYBALL CLINICS

Junior volleyball clinics began this week. We had coaches from DS Sports come to SFS to run the clinics. The students had a great time. They have been exposed to a new sport, learning basic skills in volleyball. We hope that perhaps there may be some students that enjoy volleyball and would like to continue it after school as part of a club.

Please ensure your child is wearing their sports uniform and brings their drink bottle on the following days:

SFS AUSKICK CENTRE – TERM 3

Our Auskick Centre at SFS had their third clinic on Wednesday August 14th from 3.30-4.30pm. Students once again had a great time at their clinic, learning how to hand pass, kick and other skills. Thanks to Tyler and our other AFL coaches, both students and parents enjoyed the various activities.

If you have not yet registered your child there is still time to register. Two clinics remain. Please use the QR code attached to register your child and the discount code for a $10 discount.

Parents please note that you must take students to the after school clinics and remain there for the duration of the clinic unless your child is enrolled at Kharisma. We have worked out a process for students to attend from Kharisma Kids and then return to after school care.
