National Science Week 10-18 August

The National Science Week offers many wonderful opportunities for our students to connect with the important topic of Species Survival!

  • Jacinta Early, Aquatic Scientist from SeaLife Melbourne, was our guest speaker on Tuesday and inspired our students with a talk on her amazing career journey dedicated to marine life protection and success stories in the field of marine species conservation in Port Philip Bay.
  • On Wednesday, students ran an investigative experiment to test whale’s health from whale snot (artificially simulated in the lab!) to celebrate the work done by Dr Vanessa Paritto who has developed a drone-based testing technology to collect whale’s spray specimens to test the health of these critical marine mammals in an non-invasive way.
  • Corinne Proske, CEO of Trust for Nature, communicated on Thursday on the importance of actions and engagement for land protection to maintain our Australian Wildlife.

Many thanks to our two wonderful guest speakers who have given their time to the school to raise awareness on species survival by sharing inspiring stories, passion and commitment to environmental conservation.

Drawing/Photography competition and cake competition close on Friday 16th August. Prize winners and artwork will be published in the next newsletter. So watch this space!

Australian Maths Competition at AHS

More than 70 students from Year 7 to 11 sat the Australian Maths competition on Thursday 8 August. Well done to our students’ dedication to mathematics excellence and thank you to AHS Maths Department and Maths teachers to make it happen. Results will be published in Term 4.

Term 4 – To come:

Swinburne University of Technology’s Innovation Challenge gives high ability students in years 10 to 12 an opportunity to extend their learning in Applied Innovation through a four week challenge and on-campus experience. AHS has registered an interest in participating in the 20th November session, which will conclude our STEM activities for the year. Expression of Interest is now open to Year 10 and Senior School students interested in registering a team to compete in this event. Please contact Ms Wong-Fat on MS Teams for more information.
