Learning in Action
Literacy:
This fortnight, students presented their favourite poem to the class. They focussed on using the correct pace, expression and showing the emotion that the poem has created. After the reading, students evaluated their reading, as well as, received teacher and peer feedback. These reflections were added to their Anthology.
We then began our Informative unit, utilising newspaper reports to analyse the writer’s perspective of a topic. We identified that different authors had different opinions about the date of Australia Day. Students learnt how to write a news story, focussing on the key steps for writing a successful introductory paragraph.
- Choose a newsworthy topic
- Decide on an ‘angle’
- Write a hook topic sentence.
- Complete your introduction, outlining your most important idea.
They will use this structure to begin their newspaper report on a significant event in a famous Australian's life.
In learning about grammar, we have continued to apply our knowledge of subordinating conjunctions in complex sentences and ensure our sentences are punctuated correctly.
Preview for Learning: Students will continue to work on their newspaper report about their chosen notable person, ensuring that transitional words are included. Through reading newspaper articles on Ned Kelly, students will identify the different perspectives authors can have on the same event/person.
Book Week Celebration
It was wonderful to see all of the Grade 5 students go to so much effort to come dressed as a book character. Well done all.
Maths:
Students undertook a mapping investigation, where they had the opportunity to apply all the skills they had learnt about mapping in the previous 3 weeks. They used grid coordinates, scale and an 8 point compass to provide directions round their map. Their peer’s solved the clues and identified the mystery word.
Later we began our Decimal unit. We made connections between fractions and decimals and learnt to write tenths and hundredths as a fraction and decimal and then represent it on a number line.
Preview for Learning:
We will be looking at the different types of angles and learning to measure angles accurately using a protractor. We will also be comparing and ordering decimals and learning to add two decimal numbers together.
Inquiry:
Last week we learnt about the infamous Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang and their impact on Victoria during colonisation. We showed our artistic side when we created our own Ned Kelly artwork based on the famous art pieces by Sidney Nolan.
This week, students were allocated their Australian History Notable. Through research, each student will become an expert on their chosen notable.
Preview for Learning:
Students will construct a timeline of their Notable’s life and create a map to show where significant life events occurred in the word.

STEM Day Celebration
What a fun day the Grade 5 students had last Tuesday! It began with an incursion from The Marine Team. Through an entertaining performance, they taught us the importance of looking after our ocean and how and why we should be sustainable.
Later we completed activities related to Chemical Science, where we investigated volcanoes and even completed an experiment to create our own volcano. We made predictions, recorded observations and discussed the science behind the experiment.
We also investigated Earth and Space and learnt about the Rovers that are used to collect information on Mars. Students designed their own Rovers and recorded what equipment they would require to build a replica model.
We loved having families come into our rooms so we could share our work we had completed during STEM.
Thanks to Mrs Adams and Mrs Chamberlain for organising a super day!
