Learning in Action

Reading

Over the past fortnight, we have continued reading Can You See Me?. In these chapters, students explored the challenges Tally faces following her first sleepover, where feelings of anxiety and sensory overload leave her emotionally exhausted. As the story unfolds, Tally experiences difficulties navigating friendships and social situations at school, particularly when she feels unsupported by her peers. Students also examined Tally’s decision to speak honestly to her teacher after witnessing a classmate’s wrongdoing, despite knowing it may impact her friendships. These chapters prompted rich discussions about resilience, integrity, empathy, and the complexities of social relationships.

Over the coming fortnight, students will continue reading Can You See Me? as Tally faces challenges managing anxiety during a family outing and experiences conflict with her peers at school. These chapters will prompt discussions about empathy, friendship, respectful communication, and strategies for responding to difficult situations.

Writing

Persuasive Letters

Over the last few weeks, students have been developing their persuasive writing skills by exploring connectives of cause and effect (e.g. therefore, consequently, as a result) and addition (e.g. furthermore, moreover, in addition). They have learned how these connectives create cohesion, strengthen the flow of ideas, and add a more formal tone to their writing. Students have also practised using these connectives in the fronted position, ensuring a comma follows them. Building on their understanding of persuasive text structure, students revised the components of a persuasive letter and used their plans to draft body paragraphs using the PEPS structure, incorporating persuasive devices and well-supported arguments to convince their reader effectively.

Vocabulary

DeceptionThe act of misleading someone or making them believe something that is not true.
ShrillA high-pitched, sharp sound that is often loud and unpleasant.
JeeringMaking fun of someone by shouting rude comments or laughing at them.
DismissivelyActing as though something or someone is unimportant or not worth paying attention to.
BoisterousNoisy, energetic, and full of excitement.
AnticipationA feeling of excitement or expectation about something that is going to happen.

Over the next fortnight, students will continue developing their persuasive writing skills by focusing on the structure of effective paragraphs. They will learn how to write clear topic sentences, provide supporting details through explanations and evidence, and conclude paragraphs by restating their main point. Students will also continue to explore the purpose of relative clauses, investigating how they provide additional information, add descriptive detail, clarify meaning, and help combine ideas into more complex sentences. In addition, students will examine the correct placement and punctuation of relative clauses and apply them in their own writing. Students will also investigate how independent and dependent clauses work together, using subordinating conjunctions to show relationships of condition and strengthen the complexity and accuracy of their writing.

Maths

Decimals

Over the past fortnight, students have been developing their understanding of decimals through a range of addition and subtraction activities. They have practised subtracting decimals using a vertical algorithm, applied inverse operations to check the accuracy of their calculations, and used rounding and estimation to determine the reasonableness of their answers. Students have also explored a variety of efficient calculation strategies while solving real-world worded problems involving the addition and subtraction of decimals.

Students will begin exploring probability by learning how to describe the likelihood of events using numerical scales. They will practise estimating probabilities and interpreting what different values represent, from impossible to certain outcomes. Students will also apply their understanding of probability to a range of real-life situations, helping them make predictions and explain the likelihood of everyday events.

Knowledge Rich

Immigration and International Interaction

This term in our Knowledge Rich Unit, the Grade 6 students have been exploring the history of immigration to Australia and its impact on shaping our nation. Students have investigated the many different groups of people who migrated to Australia for a variety of reasons, including those who arrived during the Gold Rush and families who participated in the £10 Pom Scheme as part of Australia's post-war "Populate or Perish" campaign between 1945 and 1965.

Students have also examined factors that influenced immigration policies and experiences, including the White Australia Policy and its effects on migration patterns. To deepen their understanding, students have been documenting key events and developments on a historical timeline, while also analysing population data to track Australia's growth during this period. Through these learning experiences, students have developed a greater appreciation of the diverse people, events, and policies that have contributed to Australia's multicultural identity today.

Going forward in Knowledge Rich, students will explore Australia's multicultural society in greater depth while developing their understanding of the experiences, rights, and challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers. Through these investigations, students will continue to build their appreciation of the diverse cultures and perspectives that contribute to modern Australian society.

Winter Round Robin Sports Recap

On Friday 22nd and 29th May, students from across Grades 5 and 6 proudly represented our school at the Regional Winter Round Robin competition. Students participated in a variety of sports, including Netball, Football, Teeball, Bowls, Soccer, and even Lysterfield's very first Hiking group. Throughout the two days, students demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, teamwork, resilience, and school pride while competing against other schools in the region.

The event provided a fantastic opportunity for students to challenge themselves, develop new skills, and build friendships with peers across different year levels. Here are some students recaps of the day below:

Netball

We arrived at Knox netball courts ready to play and have fun. The B team played their first game at 10:00, then mixed and A Grade at 10:30. The results for the first game were a win for the B team, a loss by a point on the buzzer for mixed and a loss for A team. Overall, the day was amazing with lots of fun. The finished placings were 5th for A, 4th for mixed and 3rd for B.

All the teams were nice, and some of them we had friends in the other teams. It was such a good time for me, my team and the other team. It made such magical moments.
