📖 Literacy
Over the past fortnight, students have continued reading Storm Boy, exploring the special bond between Storm Boy and his beloved pelican, Mr Percival. As the story unfolds, students have discussed how Storm Boy successfully trains Mr Percival to follow commands, including helping with fishing by carrying lines out to sea and returning them to shore. Through our reading, students have investigated rich vocabulary such as ‘Ashamed’ and ‘Slayed’ and analysed the author's use of language to create vivid images and highlight the growing friendship between Storm Boy and Mr Percival—one that the people of Goolwa would remember for years to come.
In Writing, students have been making excellent progress on their information reports about the flora and fauna of The Coorong. They have completed their introductions and developed detailed supporting paragraphs focusing on the unique plant life and animal species found within this important ecosystem. Students have researched a range of sources, practised effective note-taking using symbols and key words, identified important information, and transformed their notes into well-structured and informative paragraphs. It has been wonderful to see students expanding their knowledge while developing their research and writing skills.
Preview: Next week, students will finish reading Storm Boy and reflect on the key events, characters, and themes explored throughout the novel. In Writing, students will complete their information reports on the Coorong by writing a strong conclusion that summarises their key ideas and brings their reports to an effective close.
➗ Maths
Over the past fortnight, students have completed their learning on 2D shapes by exploring the properties of a variety of shapes, including identifying angles, sides, vertices, and lines of symmetry. To celebrate their learning, students created beautiful geometric mandala designs, applying their understanding of shape, pattern, symmetry, and spatial awareness in a creative way.
Students have also begun their Data and Graphs unit, where they have been learning how to collect, organise, and interpret data. They have explored different types of graphs and discussed how graphs can be used to display information clearly and effectively. Students have enjoyed analysing data and drawing conclusions based on the information presented.
Preview: Next week, students will continue developing their graphing skills by creating and interpreting a range of graphs, as well as using data to answer questions, identify trends, and make informed conclusions.
🧠 Knowledge Rich
Over the past fortnight, students have continued exploring the lives and achievements of significant Australian heroes and leaders who have made important contributions to our nation. Through class discussions, readings, and research activities, students have learnt about the challenges these individuals faced, the values they demonstrated, and the lasting impact they have had on Australian society.
Students have now begun applying this knowledge by learning how to write a biography. They have explored the key features of biographies, including chronological structure, factual information, and the importance of highlighting a person's achievements and contributions. Using their research skills, students have started gathering information and organising notes in preparation for writing a biography on one of the Australian heroes we have studied.
Preview: Next week, students will continue researching their chosen Australian hero and begin drafting their biographies. They will focus on organising information into clear sections and using factual details to create engaging and informative pieces of writing.
🌿 Wellbeing
Over the past fortnight, students have been learning about help-seeking and why asking for help is an important life skill. Through class discussions, role-plays, and interactive activities, students explored different situations where they may need support and identified trusted people they can turn to for help. We discussed how asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and how clear communication helps others understand what support is needed. Students also practised different ways of seeking help, both for themselves and when supporting a friend who may need assistance.
Preview: Next week, students will continue developing their help-seeking skills by exploring strategies for solving problems, recognising when a problem is too big to manage alone, and identifying the support available to them at school and in the wider community.
🏅 Sport in Grade 4
All of grade 4 want to congratulate Zac on his big achievement of being the first LPS student to run 100kn at run club. Many of the Grade 4 students attend run club and are now inspired to reach the same target as their mate.
🌟 Special Guest
We were lucky enough to welcome Mr Robinson’s dad into our classroom to share his experiences in the army. Students were fascinated to learn about his role, hear some of the things he has seen and experienced during his service, and discover the important values that guide people in the army, such as teamwork, courage, respect, and resilience.
He also brought in some of his medals, which students enjoyed seeing up close while learning about what they represent. It was a valuable and engaging experience for our Grade 4 students, and we thank him for taking the time to visit and share his stories with us.
🌟 Grade 4 Take Over
Last Friday, our first lot of Grade 4 students had the opportunity to run assembly with the 5 & 6 students out at sport. Mille, Ava and Blake were fantastic, and we are so proud of the courage they displayed to get up in front of students, teachers and parents. We can not forget their support crew of Alfie and Ryder, ensuring the microphone was working for our captains, and playing all music at the right times. We are incredibly proud of you all!
