The Australian Mathematics Competition, run by the Australian Maths Trust, is Australia’s longest running, largest and most well-known maths competition for school students. It is made up of 30 unique problems designed to challenge and extend students’ problem solving skills.

Students have 60 minutes to complete the competition which will occur at school sometime between Tuesday 4 to Thursday 6 August 2026  (exact date and time TBC).

Every student who participates will receive recognition and an award at their level of achievement. The levels are:

       📖 Literacy

Over the past fortnight, students have been reading Finding Our Heart, exploring its important messages about Australia’s history, identity and connection. Through the text, students have been learning true facts, reflecting on different perspectives, and developing a deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and histories. Rich discussions and thoughtful activities have encouraged students to think critically, ask questions, and connect the book’s messages to our world today.

Sentence Level Writing: In Sentence Level Writing, students have been learning how to expand simple sentences adding in important details such as the 'who', 'what', 'when', 'where', 'why' and 'how'. For example, after reading 'Finding Our Heart', students expanded the simple sentence, 'we protested' into a more detailed sentence by finding specific details from the book.

Text Level Writing: In Text Level Writing, students have been introduced to the structure of writing a personal response to the book, 'Finding Our Heart'. Students have begun planning their personal response by thoughtfully analysing themes, messages, and personal opinions about the story. Students will continue writing their personal responses over the coming weeks

Preview: Students will plan and write the second body paragraph and conclusion of their personal response.

➗ Maths

Over the past fortnight, students have been learning about data representation, with a focus on identifying categorical data and discrete numerical data. They explored the differences between these types of data and categorised different examples into either caterogical or discrete numerical data.

Students also developed their digital skills by using Chromebooks to copy frequency tables into spreadsheets. To apply their learning in a real-world context, students conducted class surveys about favourite recess activities. They collected and organised the results through talley marks, before entering the data into spreadsheets, building their understanding of how data can be gathered, represented and analysed using technology.

Preview: Students will conclude this unit by comparing graphical representations of data sets, before moving onto the next unit. In the next unit, we are focussing on addition and subtraction. Specifically, there will be a focus on inverse operations, adding 3-digit numbers with concrete materials, and partitioning operations.

Wellbeing

Over the past fortnight, students have been exploring the topic of personal and cultural strengths. Last week, students reflected on how we use our personal and cultural strengths by identifying their own character strengths. As a class, we discussed the actions individuals can take to demonstrate specific strengths in everyday situations.

This week, our focus shifted to respect for people and Country. Students watched the video story Someone’s Land by Adam Goodes and engaged in meaningful discussions about its messages. Through this learning, students explored the importance of respecting First Nations peoples and developed their understanding of why we do an Acknowledgment of Country.

Preview: Next week, students will explore the meaning of respect and the many ways it can be demonstrated both inside and outside the classroom. Through discussions and learning activities, students will reflect on how respectful actions and choices help to build positive relationships and create inclusive, supportive environments.
