LIBRARY NEWS

Welcome to another week in the library; I hope you can stay warm and enjoy a great book!
This Week’s Reads
It has been a busy couple of weeks in the library as Kindergarten and Stage 1 are learning more about fiction and non-fiction.
Kindergarten are becoming experts at using the correct terms for the types of books found in the library. They now know that fiction is made up, while non-fiction books are full of real facts that teach us things. To test this out, we read the hilarious story Pig the Star and the non-fiction book Pet Dogs Up Close. We learned fun facts that dogs can hear 10,000 times better than humans, but they can only actually see the colours blue and yellow! Wow.
Stage 1 has been exploring the secret lives of Australia’s famous feathered friends. After laughing their way through some of the Bin Chicken series, they turned their attention to learning real-life facts about the ibis. To do this, students have been learning to navigate non-fiction books by using features such as the contents page and headings to locate information quickly. Students were asked to illustrate a real ibis and then write one interesting fact.
Stage 2—For the remainder of the term, Stage 2 will complete a mini-research task based on Kylie Howarth's book ‘Fish Kid and the Lizard Ninja’. This book (part one of three) introduces us to Bodhi, who travels with his marine biologist parents to the Galapagos Islands, where he goes on an incredible adventure with his new friend, a marine iguana called Lizard Ninja. Apart from learning about different ocean species throughout the book with ‘Fish Kid Facts’ pages, students will also be using World Book Web to research a marine animal and then present their findings creatively.
Stage 3—We’re coming to the end of our ‘Brilliant Minds: 30 Dyslexic Heroes Who Changed the World’ research task, where students are now organising information about their chosen famous person with dyslexia. One part of information literacy is learning how to organise information into a coherent presentation and develop skills for effective communication. Students are using Canva to create biographies about their chosen person and will share them with their class in the final two weeks of the term.
We will also read a chapter about another famous person with dyslexia, Steven Spielberg, whose new movie is released this week.
We Have an Illustrator at our School!
I had a great surprise last week when Mr Koch called to say he was sending a special illustrator my way, who turned out to be none other than Jannat Dogra from Year 7! Jannat brought along a published picture book called We Went Adventuring, written by Sandra Grogan-Bailey.
As it turns out, the author worked at Jannat's previous school and was so blown away by her talent that she asked her to illustrate the entire book. What an unbelievable achievement for a student who was only in Year 6 at the time!
We read through the book together and Jannat proudly shared her favourite page. The artwork is absolutely stunning, and we have a feeling this is just the beginning for this talented young artist. Watch this space!
SORA eBooks of the Week
To keep the momentum going from last week's National Reconciliation Week celebrations, SORA features a great selection of 'eBooks of the Week' with reads perfect for every age group. These are all easily accessible at home using your child's school email and password. To log into SORA, follow these instructions.
Quick Bits
- A quick reminder that this term's Book Club closing date has been extended to 9 am on Wednesday, 10th June. Ordering is voluntary and can be done online via LOOP, with every purchase earning credits for the library to buy exciting new books for our students to enjoy. Thank you for your support!
- Premier’s Reading Challenge is still going strong, and students are making great progress. Congratulations to Matilda and Zac Andrews, Zalie Borrowdale, Phoebe Hollingworth and Elsie Guest for returning their reading logs and completing the Challenge. Great job! Don’t forget that Kindergarten and Year 1 are participating in the Challenge at school, so their reading is all done here.
- The Primary are also enjoying the new games kindly donated by the School's P&F.
Bag Tales
Bag Tales has returned this week after I saw Jade from KTM's beautiful library bag. I couldn’t agree more with what it says!
Meet the Returner
While I often recognise great borrowers, this week I couldn’t go past the best returner, Zach from 6B. He tells me his mum made him clean up his room, and look what he found. Congratulations (and thanks, Mrs Read!). With the end of the term approaching, it’s a good time to start rounding up any books that students may have lying around, too.
Meet the Borrowers
After reading some of Sami Bayly's incredible non-fiction books about animals, Harrison and Isla couldn't wait to learn more.
Happy reading!
Mrs Fraser
