Teaching and Learning in Practice

Year 1/2 Literacy
Our Year 1/2 students have been engaging in daily structured phonics rotations designed to strengthen their foundations in reading, spelling and writing. Through a combination of explicit teaching, partner reading and spelling activities, students are supported at their individual point of need. Each child is carefully assessed and grouped according to their current phoneme and grapheme understanding, ensuring learning is targeted, personalised and appropriately challenging.
The structured and repetitive nature of the program helped students develop mastery of key sounds and letter patterns, while the consistent daily routine built confidence, familiarity and a positive approach to literacy learning.
These small-group rotations also created a supportive learning environment where students felt comfortable taking risks, practising new skills and celebrating their progress along the way.
Year 7 Music
Our Year 7 students have enjoyed a busy and engaging term exploring a range of practical and creative challenges in Music.
Earlier this term, students developed their ukulele skills and recently performed assessment pieces showcasing the progress they have made. They have since transitioned to keyboards, where they have begun learning chords and short riffs from popular songs.
Alongside their practical instrument work, students have also continued building their understanding of music theory and have participated in djembe drumming activities throughout the term. In the coming weeks, students will also complete a GarageBand project, allowing them to apply the skills and knowledge they have developed in class through their own creative compositions.
The program has provided students with a valuable opportunity to strengthen their confidence, creativity and musicianship through a variety of hands-on learning experiences.
Foundation Art
Our Foundation students have been enjoying hands-on learning experiences in Art this term through a creative clay unit.
Working with clay provided students with the opportunity to strengthen their fine motor skills, explore their creativity and develop problem-solving abilities as they experimented with different shapes and designs. Students thoroughly enjoyed rolling, shaping and moulding the clay to create their own unique artworks.
The activity was a wonderful example of learning through creativity, while also encouraging confidence, imagination and self-expression in the classroom.
