Mr Nathan Smith

Welcome to another year in sport at St Aloysius College. It has been an extremely busy start to the year to get sport underway, including Thursday sport, CCC representative trials and having our swimming carnival. School sport

Sport is well and truly underway with many students representing the school in grade sports each week across various venues and playing with tremendous heart and spirit. We have the following teams competing:

  • Junior Girls and Boys Touch Football
  • Junior Girls and Boys Basketball
  • Junior Girls Water Polo
  • Senior Girls and Boys Touch Football
  • Senior Girls and Boys Basketball
  • Senior Boys Water Polo

With over 100 students representing the school on a weekly basis, this equates to approximately 40% of our year 7 & 11 students choosing grade sport. A special mention to all our junior teams who are competing against teams of year 7 & 8, always competing against students older than themselves. These teams are being competitive each week and will grow from this experience and be better for it throughout this year and next year.

Representative sport

Congratulations to the following students for their efforts thus far being selected for CCC or competing in Sydney wide competitions:

  • Will Taylor (year 11) - representing CCC Cricket and being selected in the NSW All Schools Open Cricket Team
  • Lachie Targett (year 7) - 1st in U12-14 CCC Triathlon Championships and being selected for the NSW All Schools Triathlon Team
  • Lachie Targett, Eneeki McNeilly and Brodie Stephenson (all year 7) coming 9th in NSW Triathlon Teams Relay in the U12-14 age group.
  • Alysha Mobberley-Barreto (year 11) being selected in the NSW Women's Youth Baseball Team
  • Matt Giller and Robert Ollivier (both year 12) representing the College and SCS at the NSW Schoolboy Rowing Head of the River Competition

Swimming carnival

The College’s first swimming carnival in a very long time was held at Caringbah Leisure Centre on Friday, 23 February. On one of the hottest days of the year, students arrived at the pool and were keen to cool off in the many races offered. With a full program to get through, the racing was fast with some free swims throughout the day to cool off.

Congratulations to all students who participated on the day, and those who qualified for Conference 3, which will be held at Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre on Monday, 4 March. The following students are recognised for being crowned age champions:

  • 12 years girls - Cleo Jovcevski
  • 12 years boys - Bryson Bagnall
  • 13 years girls - Madelyn Watts
  • 13 years boys - Lachie Targett
  • 16 years girls - Adelaide Thompson
  • 16 years boys - Otis Jessop
  • 17  + years girls - Holly Edmunds
  • 17 + years boys - Solomon Freeman

It was great to see the Year 12 students dress up, have fun and make special memories that will last a lifetime.

The carnival doesn’t run without the efforts of staff and students. On the day, we had a number of year 7 students willing to assist and run the marshal sheets up and down the pool deck. If we didn’t have the following students helping on the day, the day would not have run so smoothly. A big thanks to the following students for all your help:

  • Lee Hawk
  • Grace Logiacco
  • Ewan Bayer

One of the highlights on the day was the singing of the ‘house chants’ and witnessing all students come together, regardless of age and yell their multiple chants at the top of their lungs.

External sporting success

Through the holidays and through the start of Term I, we have had many students achieving success outside of the school, pursuing their sporting endeavours. Congratulations to the following students in their respective sports:

  • Tyler Metters - 3rd place NSW U17 Aquathon Championships
  • Kobe Sorenson - member of winning NSW Surf Life Saving Team and contributing with 4 x Gold by winning both his individual sprint and flags events
  • Dane Sutton - Winning U17 Ironman at 2 x Summer of Surf Events in NSW and QLD that provided him an opportunity to compete in the Open Ironman to compete against Ali Day and other professional Ironmen.
  • Chelsea Sutton - 2nd place in all individuals U18 Oceania Kayaking Championships held at Sydney International Regatta Centre
  • Tameika Dorahy, Jessica Stonestreet, Sienna Greck and Sienna Price being members of the Junior Women’s Sharks Cronulla Rugby League Teams
  • Oliver Lester, Alex Challenor and Will Stewart also members of the Junior Men’s Cronulla Sharks Rugby League Teams

Feel free to contact me or the school if your child succeeds out of school competition.
