From the Leadership Team

Dear families,

Welcome to our first edition of Modbury Matters! Thank you to everyone who voted for our school newsletter name. The name is a great reflection of our community and we are pleased to be able to share what's happening at Modbury School P-6 with you.

Parent Connection Meetings

Parent Connection Meetings are next week and will be a great way for our families to connect with their child's classroom teacher. Please read through the information below as teachers will be asking parents/caregivers the following information to build the successful foundations for each of our students. Our goal is to meet with every family.

NAPLAN Nationally Coordinated Practice Test

On Tuesday our Year 3 and 5 students participated in the NAPLAN Nationally Coordinated Practice Test.  This was an opportunity to test our IT capabilities, and familiarise the students with the online testing platform and test conditions. Our students participated in this practice test extremely well.

NAPLAN

In Weeks 7 and 8 of this term, our Year 3 and 5 students will be participating in NAPLAN.

Scheduling of NAPLAN tests

Tests will continue to be scheduled in this order:

  • writing
  • reading
  • conventions of language
  • numeracy

Public demonstration site

Students and teachers can use the NAPLAN public demonstration site at any time. We would encourage our students to practice at home on this site. The site is available as a familiarisation tool for test administrators and students to see:

  • the range of question types
  • onscreen tools
  • timers
  • the interactive navigation

Farewell to Julie

Today we farewell Julie who has accepted a position in Literacy intervention within the private sector.

We want to express our deepest gratitude for the positive impact Julie has had on our school community. Her dedication, passion, and unwavering support have truly enriched the lives of our students and staff alike.

Whilst we will miss Julie, we know her influence will continue to inspire all the students she will work with, in her new role. Thank you Julie for your invaluable contributions and best wishes for the future ahead. You will always have a special place in our hearts.

R-5 Swimming

R-5 Swimming at Waterworld is scheduled for later this term. The R-5 Water Safety is a part of the school curriculum and all children are expected to attend. Students are also expected to return to school and engage in normal timetabled lessons for the remainder of the day.  Invoices and notes will be sent out shortly. The timetable is below. Please note for rooms 11, 12 and 14 the students will need to be at school no later than 8:45 am, so they can put their bags upstairs before walking to the Waterworld at 8:55 am.

Volunteers

This week we ran the first of our Volunteer training sessions and we were thrilled to see so many parents eager to get involved in our school community. Thank you for your commitment and support!

Our next session for those that were unable to attend this week will be on: Wednesday 3 April at 6 pm. Bookings for this session are essential, please call Kym on 8264 2027 to register your interest.

School Lunch Orders

We would like to encourage our families to use the School Lunch Orders via our Qkr! app.

On Tuesdays and Fridays you can order from Metro Canteen and on Wednesdays you can order from Pie Time.

A huge shoutout to one of our parent volunteers - Tia, who is supporting our school by volunteering to pick up the lunches for us on Tuesdays and Fridays. This is a huge support to the Admin Team.  Thank you, Tia!

Combined Choir excursion

Below is a recount from some of our Choir students about the recent Combined Choir excursion:

On Tuesday 20/2/2024 Modbury School Choir went to the office and we split into our groups, and then we hopped into the teacher's cars on the way to Greenwith Primary School. The teacher's cars were Mrs Slater, Mrs Curtis and Liz. We lined up right outside the Front Office, excited to see Greenwith Primary School. The Receptionist gave Mrs Slater a big hug and invited us into the school (this was Mrs Slater's previous school). Once we walked through the playground and hallway we were in the music room, it was huge and loads of students were sitting in loads of rows of chairs. Once everyone settled down we got into the introduction. The Choir teacher was Cathy. Our first song was called 'Beautiful Creatures'. This song was from the movie Rio 2. We really liked this song, although it is pretty hard. We sang some songs like 'Festival State' and 'Impossible is Possible'. We sang other songs like 'I must clean my room' 'Wototo' and 'Waterloo' - that was in a different language. It was so much fun singing with Greenwith students.

Emergency Procedures

Every term we practice our Emergency Procedures with our students to ensure they are familiar with our emergency processes. Our students practised an evacuation on Tuesday and conducted themselves in a calm and orderly manner.

School Uniforms

Leadership have worked with the Governing Council and we are thrilled to announce that we have partnered with new suppliers to enhance our school uniform offerings! One of the great positives about our new supplier is that they manufacture locally. Our new suppliers have been carefully selected to provide durable, comfortable, and stylish uniform pieces that reflect our school's values and ethos. The Governing Council approved the new uniform at our Governing Council meeting in Week 3.

Students will still be able to wear the current design of our school uniform. We currently have low stock of the current design and we will be restocking our uniforms with the new design.

We have some new designs and options to choose from, ensuring both quality and style for our students. Please see the images below for the new designs we have coming:

  • Jumper
  • Soft Shell jacket (this will be a pre-order item only)
  • Tshirt
  • Beanie (Term 2 instead of a hat)

Stay tuned for more details on the new uniform collection and how to place your orders. We can't wait to see our students shine in their new uniforms!

Smoke-free and Vape-free areas - new regulations

From 1st March 2024, new regulations will extend the smoke-free and vape-free areas to within 10 metres of school boundaries.

This includes:

  • school drop-off and pick-up zones that are within 10 metres of the school fence, gates or boundaries
  • school ovals and sporting fields and within 10 metres of the boundary of the oval or sporting field
  • footpaths, roads, public nature strips and public recreation areas that are within 10 metres of a school boundary

Thank you for entrusting us with your children's education and your continued support in making Modbury School P-6 a truly exceptional place for learning and growth.

If you have any questions regarding your child, please feel free to come and see us.

Enjoy this edition of Modbury Matters!

Warm regards,

Sara, Ali and Sheila.
