It's been a jam packed term in the Physical Education 'Classroom'.
Our Foundation students have been developing an awareness of their bodies and surroundings by playing games like 'Builders and Bulldozers', 'Pizza Maker' and 'Octopus'. They progressed quickly in the term to developing their throwing and catching skills using various objects like beanbags, tennis balls and foam rockets.
In Year One and Two, students developed their teamwork and problem solving strategies in a number of physical challenges early in the term. They completed a unit focusing on the fundamental movement skills of throwing, catching and kicking.
The Year Three to Six students have all completed a unit on 'Invasion/Territory Games', developing their teamwork and game sense in attacking and defending spaces on a court or field. They improved their passing, dribbling and shooting skills while playing modified games based around basketball, netball and soccer.
It's been a big swimming term for our Year Four - Six students with the swimming trials, House Swimming Carnival, Seaside District Swimming Carnival and The Kingston Division Swimming Carnivals all taking place.
Congratulations to Gold House for taking out the BRPS Swimming Shield for 2024, followed by Red House in second, Green in third and Blue in fourth. This is the first time that Gold House have won the shield in over ten years. It was great to see so many students supporting and encouraging each other no matter what house they were in. Thank you to all the teachers and parents who helped out to make it a successful day for the students.
Just one week after the House Carnival a team of 30 swimmers represented BRPS at the District Swimming Carnival against the 7 other schools in Seaside District. Held at MSAC on the 7th of March it was a fantastic day out and extremely successful one for so many of our swimmers. The following results show what great depth we have at BRPS, particularly with so many great results in the relay events.
1st Place Finishers: Gemma Eaton (50m Butterfly), Zali Goulding (50m Butterfly), Girls 11yr Freestyle Relay, Open Girls Medley Relay.
2nd Place Finishers: Freddie Denness, Zali Goulding, Emily Atkins, Liam Paterson (x2), Issy Bright, Girls 9/10 Freestyle Relay, Boys 11 Freestyle Relay, Girls 12/13 Freestyle Relay.
3rd Place Finishers: Jasper Sonneveld, Emily Atkins, Augie Tucker, Gemma Eaton, Holly Sonneveld, Joe Eaton, Chloe Gillard, Boys 12/13 Freestyle Relay, Boys Open Medley Relay.
Overall BRPS finished in second place behind Beaumaris North P.S and ahead of Brighton Beach P.S in third. A fantastic effort and a big congratulations to all the swimmers for their amazing efforts on the day and great team spirit. Thanks to Ms Thompson and Ms Byrnes for helping the team throughout the day and to all the parents who came to support, especially Carol Every and Elissa Marshall for their help on pool deck the entire day.
The students who placed first in the District Carnival progressed to the Kingston Division Swimming Carnival at Oakleigh Recreation Centre on the 12th of March. It was a great day to be a part of and our all girl team represented BRPS and the district extremely well against some tough competition.
Gemma Eaton finished 4th and Zali Goulding 3rd in their 50m butterfly events. The Girls 11 Year Freestyle Relay team of Mila Tehan, Akira Murray, Emily Atkins and Abby Marshall finished 2nd. Finally, the Girls Open Medley Relay team of Abby Marshall, Chloe Gillard, Emily Atkins and Zali Goulding finished 3rd.
Congratulations to all the students who swam in any event this term representing their houses or BRPS. Time to put the Speedos away and pull out the running shoes for Cross Country next term.
The Summer season wrapped up at the end of Week 8 when our Year 5/6 students completed their 7th and final matches against the other Seaside District schools. It was an up and down season for all teams with a mix of wins, losses and draws had throughout the term. Although we did not come away with any pennants this term, the senior students should be proud of themselves for representing BRPS well by showing great teamwork and sportsmanship. Well done to all the teams for their great efforts and a final thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to travel with the away teams each week (particularly the double headers).
The Winter season at this stage is scheduled to begin in Week Three of Term Two, Friday 3rd of May.
I am pleased to announce that during Term Two we will be offering a Run Club for students who would like to build their skills and fitness ahead of the BRPS Cross Country Carnival (and District Cross Country event later in the term).
Starting in Week One, a group of enthusiastic parents led by Susanne Baker and Debbie Halas will be putting the willing students through their paces on Wednesday mornings between 8am and 8:45am on the oval. A number of staff have volunteered their time to supervise throughout the term (you might even see some of them joining in if they can be torn away from their coffee).
Whilst the running club is predominantly aimed at the students in Years 4 - 6, younger students are welcome to attend. We are asking however that if your child in Foundation - Year 3 is going to attend that a parent also stays to supervise them in case the activity becomes a bit too much for them.
Keep an eye out for a separate Compass post at the start of next term for all the updated information.
