Library

We are excited to be returning to another year of learning at John Paul II. After many months of waiting, we will be moving into our amazing new library at the beginning of April.

The year began with students in library lessons sharing and enjoying a range of colourful and often humorous picture books exploring the beautiful summer we have enjoyed. This allowed us to learn about the different ways summer is experienced across Australia.

Wandering through a small seaside market on a wet and humid Queensland summer evening, rows of colourful 3D printed dragons were clustered together on a small table. Three were ready to fly home to Tasmania.

This week in library lessons we explored fantasy stories about magical people and beings that exist in fictional worlds. Fantasy is one of the most popular genres in our library, particularly dragon books, and our students were fascinated by the three multi-coloured 3D printed dragons. Examining these dragons, we discussed the development of software to design different models and the process of 3D printing. We were also able to link this to sustainability, as the 3D models were printed using materials made from cornstarch. This means they are biodegradable and break down naturally over time, unlike normal plastic that fragments and can take hundreds of years to break down. Our younger students enjoyed reading  picture books together about dragons and holding a colourful orange dragon from the story Zog.

We are looking forward to the next chapter of our library journey in our new building.
