Round the classes

Indonesian: Susan
In Indonesian we have started our new topics. The older classes have begun the topic Kapan? (When?) and the younger classes are focusing on the word punya (to have). The JP students have been busy making naga (dragons) and kura-kura (turtles) which feature in this term’s story. The older students have been using the days of the week to interpret timetables. The year 4/5 and 5/6 students have also just completed their individual projects on islands or native animals of Indonesia. They discovered some fabulous facts which they presented to a friend or to the class. Did you know a baby pangolin is a pangopup? This term Stephen’s class is researching Indonesian animals and creating short non-fiction books to share.
Our teddies this term are the orangutans Budi and Budiwati.
Art: Mrs Tume
The Junior Primary students are focusing on visual arts techniques this term, exploring colour, shape and lines. Students experimented with crepe paper to add texture and dimension to their artworks. The year 2/3 class, are discovering imaginative drawing techniques inspired by the book ‘The Lost Thing’ by Shaun Tan. Students are practicing how to create the illusion of texture and form on a 2D surface. Imagining the future through collaborative art making is the project for the year 3/4 students based on the work of artists Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan, who create intricate cardboard cities. Students are developing their own future communities using cardboard construction techniques. Upper Primary students are exploring artists, researching time period, facts about the artist, their artistic style or movement. The students are then creating their own artwork inspired by the artist. The current artist and artwork focus is Vincent Van Gogh ‘Starry Night.’
PE: Troy
For the past four weeks, I have had limited time in the classroom. One of my highlights has been taking the year 5/6 class for their volleyball unit. As part of my aim to develop student agency in Physical Education lessons, students have been placed into teams for the term. They have had to work together to create team norms, name, colours and logo. Students have begun developing their volleyball skills of passing and setting. Over the next month students will also be taught how to umpire, score and set up. By the end of the term, students will run their own competition in uniforms created by both myself and students. We look forward to sharing this sports unit with you.
Science: Jess
This term in science, we’ve kicked off with a focus on Biological Sciences, and what an exciting start it has been!
Our younger learners have been exploring different habitats and learning all about what animals need to survive in the wild. From shelter and food to water and space, they’ve been asking thoughtful questions and showing great enthusiasm for the natural world.
The older year levels have taken a deeper dive into adaptations – both physical and behavioural. We’ve had fascinating discussions about how animals have evolved to suit their environments and the incredible ways they survive and thrive.
We’ve also been lucky enough to join the Nature Education Centre, which has allowed us to borrow Reptile and Bird Kits. These kits have been a fantastic opportunity for students to observe and learn about these creatures up close, a truly hands-on way to connect with the science we’re studying in class.
Every class has been engaging in rich, curious conversations, and it’s been a joy to witness their interest and wonder grow each week. The students of Uraidla Primary continue to impress me with their thoughtful observations and questions – they really are budding scientists!
Looking forward to our biological science incursion in week 6.
Readers Cup
Last week, two groups of Year 5/6’s went to Bridgewater Primary for the Readers Cup performance. These students were Harrison, Louie, Maddi, Gus (team 2) and Ashton, Ellie, Ted and Tilly (team 1) . The other schools were Stirling East, Littlehampton, Bridgewater and Nairne Primary Schools. We went there to do a play on a book we had to read at school. The book was Fabulous Frogs by Katrina Germein and illustrated by Suzanne Houghton. A frog specialist (from Frog Watch) came in to tell us about some of the frogs in the book, his name was Steve Wright. Students has to show their knowledge of the book by doing a performance. Some of plays included a puppet show put on by Stirling East, a news report by Uraidla and a TV show by Bridgewater. Ellie, Tilly, Ted and Ashton were lucky enough to come second place an over all. Their quiz score was added to their performance score. Everyone had lots of fun!
