Spotlight on Learning

Ephesus Community

Dear Families,

 

Welcome back to Term 3! We hope you had a restful and enjoyable break. It has been lovely to see the children return with big smiles, eager to learn and reconnect with their classmates.

 

This week, we’ve been focusing on re-establishing our classroom routines and preparing for an exciting term of learning. Students have enjoyed sharing their holiday experiences and revisiting our class expectations to ensure a positive and respectful start to the term.

 Religious Education and Inquiry

This term in Religious Education, we are exploring how God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are with us throughout our faith journey. Their love helps us grow into kind, caring people who look after ourselves and others. We will be linking this to our Integrated Studies, where we are learning about the different types of "fuel" we need in life to grow—such as having a healthy body and mind.

 

Maths

In Mathematics, Year 3 students are learning to solve multiplication and division problems using a range of strategies. They are building confidence by using known facts, visual models, and correct mathematical language. Students are also learning how to check their answers using inverse operations. These skills are helping them become more accurate and efficient problem-solvers.

English

We have started reading our new novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. This exciting story is about a mysterious metal giant who suddenly appears on a hilltop, surprising and scaring the local people. As we read, we are learning how the author uses powerful language and imagery to make the story interesting and dramatic.

In writing, we are beginning our new Information Report about iron. Students will learn to research and write about the characteristics and properties of iron (what it looks like, feels like, and how it behaves), where it is found in nature, and how it is mined in Australia. We will also explore how iron is used in everyday life—for example, in buildings, machines, tools, and transport.

 

AUSLAN

In Auslan (Australian Sign Language), students are learning how to show a story rather than just tell it. They are using visual elements like drawing shapes in the air, showing how characters move, and expressing emotions through facial expressions and body language. These elements help students better understand and retell stories. By learning to recognise and use these features, students are building skills to create richer signed stories.

Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR

This week, students have been learning about identity by sharing their own interests and what makes them unique. They explored the similarities and differences between classmates and discussed the importance of respecting each other's individuality. Students also learned that boys and girls can enjoy the same interests and that everyone should feel proud of who they are.
