Dear Families,
Welcome back to Term 3. The routines implemented in Semester 1 have provided a solid foundation for students to quickly resettle back into the classroom successfully. Students happily shared their holiday adventures with their friends and continued to embark on their learning journey. Here are some books we will read in term 3.

A wet day program is always a good time to share, chat and play as a community. Some photos of our first week back during wet day play :)

Religious Education Focus:
Students are learning about the creation story and how we can take care of God's creation. Students learnt the order of the events according to Genesis, which was our vocabulary word for the week.
English focus:.
We are reading "Why Do I Grow?" by Madeline Turner. The book shares interesting facts about chemicals that help us grow and when we stop growing. Students were fascinated by growing toenails and nose hair. This book ties in with our integrated topic, Fuel for the journey by helping students know what they need to grow.

Phonics: During phonics this week we learnt how to spell words with the 'ow' as in cow and 'ou' as in cloud, sounds. You can conduct a mini dictation activity or ask your children to use these words in sentences.

Mathematics focus: This week we are beginning to explore division and sharing. We are looking at being able to share something equally into groups and identify how many groups and how many in each group.

SEL: This term we learning about gender norms and stereotypes as well as positive gender relations. We start the term with a pre-assessment to show what the students already understand and believe about the gender norms.
Inquiry: The overarching inquiry statement for semester two is 'Fuel for the journey'. Students will learn about the types of 'fuel' they need (nutrition, sleep, physical activity, spiritual food) to go on their 'journey' of life. Students will bring home a questionnaire about their birth and special milestones growing up. We are also asking you to please share a nutritious family recipe that you enjoy making at home. Please return these by Monday week 2 (28/07) please. You can either print and paste a baby photo or e-mail it to your child's classroom teacher directly.

AUSLAN:
This week we learnt the signs:

Religious Education: Students will work in groups to complete group projects based on the story of creation.
Inquiry focus: Next week for Inquiry we will learn about how we have grown and changed with our independence. We will also learn about the importance of movement as a key fuel for our growing journey.
English focus: Next week we are reading a Fiction book, All through the year, by Tess Godwin. This book will show how students change over the year.

Mathematics focus: At the beginning of term 3 we will start learning about sharing and regrouping of numbers.
SEL: Next week we are comparing students preferences in games and activities.

AUSLAN Focus: Students will learn the following signs during AUSLAN.

Ways to engage with the newsletter:
Read or watch the weekly book with your child at home (there is often a read aloud on you tube). Talk about what the book's most important ideas are.
Ask your child to 'retell' the story using their own words.
Talk about who the characters are, where the story is happening.
Use the spelling words provided to make up sentences at home or simply have a 5 word mini dictation.
Take the idea around Mathematics and ask students to repeat an activity they did at school, with you.
If your child has more than 1 take home reader at home, please return the extra books to us. We need to make sure that every child has access to books at their reading level.
Please ensure students have a jumper or sports jackets for outside play for term 3.
If your child is unwell and finds it difficult to concentrate at school, perhaps a rest day is needed.
In preparation for our unit, can we please ask families to provide a baby photo for each student. You can e-mail or send a printed copy to their own classroom teacher.
Comprehension questions to ask based on the take home reader:
"Point to where it shows...."
“I wonder why…”
"what makes you think...."
“This reminds me of…”
"Show me where it says"
“I didn’t understand that part, so I’ll reread it.”
Use a mix of Who, What, When, Where, Why, How questions based on the book.
