STSS

Science, Technologies, Sustainability & Stewardship

Welcome back to Term 3! This term in STSS, we will continue our focus on developing student learning in the digital and design curriculum technologies areas.  This semester, our science focus will shift from the Biological Sciences onto the Chemical Sciences curriculum area.

Junior students will be exploring the materials that make up everyday objects. They will learn to describe the observable properties of these materials such as texture, colour, hardness, and flexibility and recognise that many objects are made from more than one material. Students will be encouraged to think about why particular materials are chosen for certain uses. They will also investigate simple ways that materials can be changed, such as bending, folding, or cutting, without changing what the material is made of.

Middle years students will begin classifying materials as solids, liquids, or gases based on what they can see and feel. They will explore how heating and cooling can cause materials to change state, such as melting, freezing, or evaporating. Students will also investigate how the properties of different materials affect their use in everyday life, and consider how materials can be reused or recycled depending on those properties. This learning encourages students to think critically about sustainability and how we manage resources.

Senior students will take a deeper dive into the science of materials by exploring the movement and arrangement of particles in solids, liquids, and gases. They will relate this particle behaviour to the observable properties of different states of matter. Students will also model how particles interact in mixtures and identify whether changes to substances are reversible (like freezing water) or irreversible (like baking a cake). This learning will help students develop a more scientific understanding of the changes they observe in the world around them.

Lots of exciting learning opportunities for students this semester. Stay tuned for more in the weeks ahead…
