Dear Families,
Welcome back to an exciting new term!
It’s been a wonderful start to Term 3, filled with rich learning experiences and exciting opportunities for our Year 6 students.
On Wednesday, students had a memorable opportunity to attend a live performance of West Side Story at St Peter’s College. This vibrant and moving production sparked great conversation about storytelling through music, dance, and drama.

Religious Education Focus:
Students completed an assessment task to activate their knowledge and understanding of the Eucharist and Sacraments. These foundations will support our deep dive into this important area of our faith this term.
English Focus:
Reading:
To support our class novel Once by Morris Gleitzman, students began building background knowledge of the Holocaust. This important context will help them better understand the experiences and emotions of the characters, as well as the historical setting of the story.
Writing:
In Writing, we focused on relative clauses and how they can be used to add detail and richness to our sentences. Students practised identifying and using them in their own writing to create more descriptive and engaging texts.
Mathematics Focus:
In Maths , students continued their work with fractions. One highlight was using coloured teddies, assigning fraction values to each colour, and then adding their totals. Students explained to their partners why their total was larger or smaller, using fraction walls and clear mathematical reasoning. They also tackled real-world word problems that challenged them to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
Integrated Studies Focus:
We launched our new unit on identity with a pre-assessment on what we already know. Students began thinking about how our identity is shaped by the people and places around us, and how we can care for ourselves and others.
Auslan Learning Focus
In Auslan, we’ve been learning how to bring stories to life by signing character actions. Students are discovering that using expressive movement and facial expressions helps make signed storytelling more engaging and meaningful.
SEL Learning Focus:
This week, students completed a pre-assessment exploring their current understanding of gender and stereotypes. This will guide our learning as we begin to unpack how these ideas can shape people’s experiences and the way we see the world.
Kind regards,
The Year 6 Team
