Year 7 HASS – archaeological dig
Year 7 students in Miss Nykiel’s HASS class have been learning about the Ancient World this term and have been exploring the importance of artefacts and what they teach us about the past. They put their theoretical knowledge to the test recently where they were involved in an archaeological dig.
During the activity, students formed small groups and received a tub full of sand and various artefacts. They carefully created sections in their tubs using twine to record where their artefacts were found. When they uncovered their artefacts, one group member would extract the artefact carefully from the sand, another would record where it was found (including how deep it was in the tub), another would clean the artefact carefully with a paint brush and the other group member would sift through the remaining sand.
After discovering all artefacts, students completed a source analysis sheet and made assumptions about the items age, origin and use. They also drew conclusions about the type of people that would have used those items and what it said about the society that those people lived in.
All students thoroughly enjoyed the activity and becoming archaeologists for the lesson. Thank you also to Ms Glass for supporting the planning and facilitation of this activity!

Year 9 students shine at South Australian Students Association Awards Ceremony and Immersion Day
On Friday 27 June, a group of year 9 students from Aberfoyle Park High School attended the South Australian Students Association Awards Ceremony and Immersion Day at The Heights School in Modbury. This exciting event brought together students learning Spanish from various independent and state schools.
Our students were assigned a table and a designated Latino country, where they engaged in interactive quizzes and activities. The day began with an awards ceremony, including the prestigious Stage 2 SACE Award. We are proud to announce that Gabriel Santos, a Class of 2024 year 12 graduate, received a Merit for achieving a perfect score of 20.
Following the awards, students participated in a series of activities that were well-received. They engaged positively and cooperated enthusiastically in various tasks, showcasing excellent effort. The day included songs, videos, interviews, quizzes, and dancing, providing diverse and enjoyable learning experiences. ¡Qué fantástico!
Congratulations to all our students for their outstanding participation and representation of our school.
