Year 12 Outdoor Education

Skeleton Waterhole Creek Bioscan
Outdoor and Environmental Studies students, as part of their Unit 3 and 4 classes, undertake hands-on learning experiences in the outdoors, with our first class excursion being at the nearby Skeleton Waterhole Creek - one of Victoria's longest creek streams.
The class walked from school to the creek to undertake a bioscan and physical testing regimen in the environment, including assessing the soil, water, and air quality, while also keeping an eye out for local species. The students found the water and soil to be in quite good shape, which will inform their understanding of the environment in time for their Unit 4 Area of Study SAC 1, which is coming up in Early August.
The students worked well together in small groups to experiment on the soil and water samples and even managed to spot a local European hare!
I am proud of the group’s learning and how they can use this information to support them in real-life applications - like when they are taking part in recreation activities in outdoor environments.
Escape Hunt
As part of their 'Facilitating Groups' unit within their 2nd Year Sports and Recreation subject, the class made their way to Escape Hunt Melbourne to put their problem-solving and collaborative skills to the test.
The class took part in an Escape Room scenario where they needed to solve a range of different puzzles and riddles to win the game and escape the room. All of the students did really well, almost making it out with only two questions left to go; it is rated as one of the most difficult escape rooms in Melbourne. The students used compromise, cooperation, active listening, and brainstorming skills to overcome the challenges in the room and had a great time participating.
At the end of the session, the students heard from the facilitators of the Escape Room experience to pick up firsthand how they can effectively plan their own future recreation sessions, as they will be working directly with our Year 10 Exercise Science classes beginning in August.
I was proud of their conduct and the skills they worked hard to develop during the excursion, keep up the great work, Year 12 Sport and Rec!
