Prep Scientists in Action! đŸ”ŹđŸŒ±

Our Prep students have been busy exploring the wonderful world of science this term! Through fun, hands-on activities and exciting experiments, our young learners have been discovering how the world around them works.

2D celebrated Kultaj Gill in library this week for achieving 100 nights of reading for the Early Years Ribbit program run by the EY Library to encourage little minds to read with an adult. He received a novel and award for his commitment to literacy from our librarian, Mrs McLaughlin.

Grade 3 Melbourne Zoo Excursion

Our Year 3 students embarked on an unforgettable adventure to the Melbourne Zoo a day packed with discovery, excitement, and encounters with some of the world’s most fascinating animals!

From the moment we stepped through the gates, the zoo was alive with the sounds of chattering monkeys, roaring lions, and curious students eager to explore.  Our day began with the Features, Life Cycle and the Environment program. This program supports students’ understanding of how the seven seasons of the Kulin Nation affect the growth and survival of living things. Students explored how these changes impact species and their environment while developing science skills to positively influence their community. Students were amazed to learn how animals survive in the wild and how the zoo helps protect endangered species.

Year 8 La Trobe University Incursion- “Future world, future you”

On Thursday, 7th August, our Year 8 students took part in an exciting and thought-provoking workshop titled “Future World, Future You.” The session challenged students to imagine a hypothetical mission to Mars, where only a limited number of professions could be selected to help establish a sustainable environment for future astronauts. Students explored a wide range of careers and educational pathways, working collaboratively to decide which roles were essential for survival and success on Mars. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to think critically about the future of work, innovation, and teamwork. We were also thrilled to welcome Hammad Shahin, a La Trobe University student ambassador and proud Mount Ridley College alumnus, who facilitated the session and inspired our students with his journey.

Australian Catholic University’s- Uni Step up program

Last year, three of our current year 12 students—Anika, Justin, and Arushi—successfully completed the Uni Step-Up program with Australian Catholic University (ACU), gaining firsthand experience of university-level learning.

As part of the program, students explored pathways in nursing, midwifery, and paramedicine, engaging in a “taste test” of courses that offered both academic challenge and real-world relevance. Impressively, all three students graduated from the program with university credits for two subjects: Indigenous Health and Culture and Evidence for Practice.

This achievement not only gives them a head start in their future studies but also highlights their dedication and enthusiasm for careers in health and community care. Congratulations to Anika, Justin, and Arushi for stepping up and making the most of this incredible opportunity!

ABCN Find Your Purpose

Students had the valuable opportunity to attend an excursion to the Commonwealth Bank headquarters, where they were introduced to inspiring mentors who played a key role in helping them explore their future aspirations. Throughout the day, students engaged in meaningful conversations about their interpersonal skills and personal qualities, gaining insight into how these strengths can shape their pathways beyond school. They left the experience feeling motivated and excited to share their learnings with their families, reflecting on the impact the day had on them. As a teacher, it was an incredibly rewarding experience to see their growth and enthusiasm firsthand.

MRC Community Day

MRC Community Day was a vibrant celebration designed to promote diversity, strengthen school connections, and foster a strong sense of community spirit. The event featured a range of engaging activities, including a Sticker henna station, cultural dance performances, origami making, and “Sports Around the World.” These experiences encouraged students to explore different cultures, express creativity, and connect with one another in a fun and meaningful way.

Our Senior School student leaders played a key role in the success of the day. They worked incredibly hard, gathering data, coordinating logistics, and organising each activity with dedication and enthusiasm.  They are to be congratulated for their efforts in encouraging unity amongst the student body.

This day would also not have been possible without the ongoing support and generosity of our staff, who guided and assisted students in running the activities. Their involvement was vital in bringing the event to life and ensuring a smooth, inclusive experience for everyone involved.

Dante Poetry Recitation Competition

Students recently had the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in classical Italian literature through the Dante Poetry Recitation Competition. This event celebrated the poetic genius of Dante Alighieri, widely regarded as the father of the Italian language, and provided students with a platform to explore and perform excerpts from his most renowned work,

Growing in the Garden ( GIG)

Our year 11 VM PDS students and the early year students (GIG team) have been working hard in the garden to get it up and going again. Here is some of the produce that we have got so far, it is in the staff room. Hoping for a gold coin donation.  If you also inquire, you can request Rosemarry as we have a tone growing at the moment, the VM students will be happy to cut wrap and deliver to you.

From the GIG team.

VM year 12 Psychology

VM Psychology students have been diving deep into the study of human senses, exploring how we perceive the world through sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. As part of their hands-on learning, they recently conducted a fascinating experiment involving the dissection of a cow’s eye. This practical activity allowed students to gain a better understanding of the structure and function of the eye, reinforcing their knowledge of sensory processing in a real-world context. By examining the different parts of the eye—such as the lens, retina, and optic nerve—students could connect theoretical learning to tangible experience, enhancing both their curiosity and comprehension of how vision works and draw connections to their own lives. Soon they will participate in a excursion to SENSA, which challenges all their senses to overcome trails and work as a team.

Psychology  Year 11 VCE

As part of their studies in Unit 2 Social Psychology, students have been exploring how individuals behave in group settings and respond to authority figures. To bring their learning to life, the class visited the Melbourne Zoo to conduct a real-world observation task. Focusing on the Butterfly House and Lemur House, students observed how people followed or in some cases, ignored—rules and regulations, not touching animals or trying to feed. The excursion provided valuable insights into social influence, obedience, and group behavior, allowing students to see psychological theories in action within a public setting.

Year 12 Japanese Immersion excursion

As part of our Unit 4, Outcomes 1 and 2 studies on Japanese school lunches, our Year 12 students recently embarked on a cultural and culinary excursion to a Japanese restaurant. This enriching experience gave students a hands-on insight into how school lunches are served and celebrated in Japan.

During the excursion, students participated in preparing and cooking authentic Japanese dishes, learning about the careful balance of nutrition, presentation, and tradition that defines Japanese food culture. Beyond the kitchen, they practiced the Japanese way of cleaning up after meals as an important part of daily school life in Japan and were introduced to traditional table etiquette, including how to use chopsticks respectfully and express gratitude before and after eating.

This excursion not only deepened students understanding of Japanese culture, but also highlighted the importance of responsibility, mindfulness, and appreciation when it comes to food.

Ecolinc: Y12 Organic Chemistry Excursion

Our Year 12 Chemistry students recently participated in an enriching excursion to EcoLink, where they deepened their understanding of organic chemistry through hands-on learning and exposure to industry-level scientific equipment.
