Grade 1 Excursion to Bundoora Heritage Farm

Learning About Life in the Past

As part of our current Unit of Inquiry, “Where We Are in Place and Time,” our Grade 1 students had the opportunity to step back in time during an engaging excursion to Bundoora Heritage Farm.

The day was filled with hands-on activities that helped students understand what daily life was like for people in the past. Some highlights included:

🖋️ Olden Day Schoolhouse – Students sat in a replica schoolroom and experienced what learning looked like long ago. They completed writing tasks using old-fashioned materials.

🏡 Old Homestead Chores – Students rolled up their sleeves and tried traditional tasks like washing clothes on a washboard, using a carpet sweeper, and churning butter by hand.

🎲 Old-Fashioned Games – Lots of fun was had outdoors playing gumboot throwing, skittles, quoits, and hoop games — no screens in sight!

🧾 Printing Press Demonstration – Everyone had a chance to print their own initials using a traditional printing press and tiny reversed letter blocks — a great lesson in patience and precision!

🌿 Indigenous History Safari Tour – On a ride through the grounds in an open-air cart, students learned how Indigenous Australians lived off the land and cared for Country using natural materials and sustainable practices.

It was a wonderful day filled with curiosity, discovery, and plenty of joyful moments. The excursion helped students make strong connections to our classroom learning, and they returned with stories, questions, and insights to share.
