Reflections on Holy Week and Easter

As a whole College, tomorrow we will gather on Breen Oval to reflect on the events of Palm Sunday and how they connect to the rest of Holy Week, before acknowledging the significance of Easter.

As humans, we are a fickle bunch. Jesus was welcomed and praised as he entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and only a week later, he was killed because of the same crowd. As Christians, we believe Jesus had to die for our salvation, but his sacrifice was still truly amazing. He was fully human (and fully divine) meaning this suffering and death would have been unimaginable. God’s love for us made this happen.

What does our love of God lead us to? ‘Live life to the full’ (John 10:10), ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’ (John 13:34) ‘those who humble themselves will be exalted.’ (Luke 14:11), ‘I have compassion for the crowd’ (Matt 15:32), ‘I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me’ (Matt 25:35-36).

Our love of God calls us to put our faith into action and the joy of Easter reminds us of our blessings and our side of the Covenant.

Our liturgy will look at our Covenant with God throughout time, celebrate Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and highlight some key features of what is to come over Holy Week.

We are lucky to have to time away from work and school to spend time in our parishes this coming Holy Week and Easter. The Mass of the Last Supper will take place next Thursday night, followed by Stations of the Cross and The Passion on Friday (the most solemn day of our calendar; not a day for parties or the Easter Show). Jesus is then in the tomb for the three days until the Easter Vigil takes place on Saturday night reflecting the importance of light and the hope Jesus’ Resurrection offers all of us. Sunday 20 April, then marks Easter Sunday, a day to come together as parishes and families to give thanks for all Christ did for us, and how we can live as worthy recipients of this love. For the first time in a while also, both Catholic and Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter on the same day, really unifying our Church.

God bless each of you in this celebration of life and love. Happy Easter!

A Sustainable Easter

As we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, may we take care of the planet created and given to us by God. We can’t claim to love God when we treat people and the planet, all of creation, with contempt or disrespect. There are many sites and sources to guide us on the right path, giving tips along the way, but here is one site that could help - Easter sustainability tips - Sustainability - University of Queensland. Pay particular attention to the recycling part and collect all easter egg foil to make one big ball so it is recycled rather than landfill.

Have a happy sustainable Easter!
