Easter

The first three days of the term have been both busy and meaningful. We began the week celebrating the joy of Easter, which teaches us about hope and reminds us of our mission to bring Christ into the world every day.

On Easter Monday, we received the sad news of Pope Francis' passing. It was important for us to come together as a community to remember and honor his life. It was heartening to see our students and families participate in the prayer service. You may have also noticed that our flags have been flown at half-mast during this official period of mourning.

I encourage you to try Pope Francis’ Five Finger Prayer, which we shared during Wednesday’s service. This prayer uses the fingers on your hand to guide your intentions:

  • The thumb reminds us to pray for those closest to us, like family and friends.
  • The index finger encourages prayer for teachers, instructors, and healers who guide and support us.
  • The tallest middle finger is for leaders and those in authority, asking for God’s guidance for them.
  • The ring finger, being the weakest, reminds us to pray for the vulnerable, the sick, and those in need.
  • Finally, the smallest pinkie finger reminds us to pray for ourselves, seeing our needs with proper perspective after praying for others

Melbourne Catholic, a website by the Archdiocese of Melbourne has been updated and offers clear and helpful information about how we, as a Catholic community, continue to celebrate the life and contributions of Pope Francis. The site also includes key dates and explanations of Catholic traditions and rites.

A Solemn Pontifical Mass for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis will be celebrated by Archbishop Peter A Comensoli at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Monday 28 April at 1pm. All are welcome.
