Grade 1 & 2

Term 2

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome back to another fun-filled term! We hope your Easter break was full of fun, rest, and maybe a few sleep-ins. It’s been wonderful to see our students return with big smiles, ready to learn and reconnect with their classmates.

This term brings new adventures in learning as our Grade 1 and 2 students dive into fresh topics and activities across the curriculum. From building stronger reading and writing skills to exploring number patterns and engaging sports and creative arts, there's so much to look forward to!

Please keep an eye out for updates throughout the term, including class activities, important dates, and ways to support learning at home.

Literacy

Our little Grade 1 authors have launched into Term Two with great enthusiasm! We're diving into the world of recount writing—planning, drafting, and editing our own stories to build confidence and fluency. Students are also expanding their research skills by exploring topics of personal interest and gathering interesting facts to support their writing. In our writing sessions, we’re growing our tricky words repertoire and learning to use these words in Super Sentences—sentences that showcase our understanding of grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.

In Reading, we’re developing deeper comprehension skills by drawing on prior knowledge, and discussing texts in meaningful ways. We’ve also taken on the role of Word Detectives—identifying topic-specific and unfamiliar vocabulary to help build our understanding of the texts we read.

Grade 2's have started the term by drafting, editing and writing a recount of their school holidays with all the highlights of Easter. After initially writing a recount, students edited for spelling and punctuation and looked to improve their writing by adding adjectives to make it more interesting and create a better picture in the reader's mind. Following the editing process, students proudly typed up their work and published it ready for Open morning this week.

In reading, we have been focussing on making connections to our own experiences, predicting what a story will be about or what will happen next and increasing our vocabularly by stopping and discussing words that might be new to us when reading a text. These strategies greatly enhance your child's comprehension and are useful discussion tools at home to ensure that your child is understanding what they are reading.

Numeracy

In Mathematics, our Grade 1 students have been exploring ways to collect and organize data to answer questions. They’ve been practicing recording information using bar graphs, pictographs, lists, tally marks, and symbols—learning how to make sense of numbers in everyday life!

Students have also started learning how to measure the length of objects using formal and informal units. They are discovering why the number of units might change depending on what is used to measure and are learning the importance of using rulers correctly. Whether using blocks, paper clips, or rulers, our young mathematicians are beginning to understand the important elements of measurement in a hands-on and meaningful way.

In Grade 2 we have started our unit on addition and subtraction. Students have learned about all the different vocabularly we can use for addition, practised their doubles and near doubles facts and used a variety of strategies to solve addition problems, including splitting numbers into their place value and using the jump strategy to count on hundreds charts and number lines. We have played lots of games and used lots of hands on activities to consolidate and extend our addition knowledge.

Here is a quick a easy game that you might like to play at home to practise quick recall of addition within twenty facts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NYk0ekVdTs

Family Morning at ACPS: A Celebration of Learning and Engagement

This week, we had the pleasure of hosting the Family Morning event at ACPS, where our students showcased their hard work and accomplishments. Parents, Guardians and  visitors were invited to visit classrooms, providing a wonderful opportunity for families to engage in their children's learning journeys.

The event fostered a sense of community and collaboration, as families and visitors alike explored projects, discussed classroom activities, and celebrated the achievements of our students. We are grateful to everyone who participated, as this event plays a key role in strengthening the connection between home and school.

Thank you to all the families who joined us for this special occasion, and we look forward to more opportunities to collaborate in the future!
