Science in Full Swing at Berwick College

The Science Department has been buzzing with hands-on learning and exciting investigations, with students across all year levels applying their skills in practical and meaningful ways.

Our year 7 students have been refining their laboratory techniques, focusing on measurement, data recording and structuring lab reports. Year 8 students have been actively exploring electricity by constructing and testing series and parallel circuits, while year 9 students have been conducting flame tests to observe how different elements react when heated.

In year 10, elective students have been working through their first assessment cycle. In their studies of forensics, genetics and chemistry, students have been applying their knowledge to solve real-world scenarios.

Meanwhile, year 12 Biology students have been exploring biotechnology through an experiment where they introduced a gene that made bacteria glow under UV light. Many senior students have also been taking advantage of lunchtime study sessions to consolidate their learning and prepare for assessments. We commend them for their commitment and dedication to their science studies.

Year 12 Psychology - Conditioning with Dogs

Unit 3 Psychology students were lucky enough to have Brad and Radar from Therapy Animals Australia come to reinforce their knowledge of classical and operant conditioning. Students learnt how both forms of learning are used by Brad when training service and therapy dogs. Brad showed off Radar’s tricks, including showing students how Radar can bring him items from drawers and sniff out money. We are thankful for Brad and Radar for demonstrating how both forms of learning are used in his profession and helping students form a connection between their learning and real-world contexts.

With so much happening in the lab, students have been actively engaged in scientific thinking, problem-solving and experimentation. We look forward to sharing more of their achievements in the months ahead!
