Year 3/4

It has been a really busy start to the year!  Students have made lots of new friends and participated in many amazing activities.

Reading

Students have been developing skills to help them with their comprehension.  They have been learning to ask and answer inferential, explicit, evaluative, and applied questions to improve their understanding of books that they have read.  They have also practised visualising what they read, as well and making predictions of what they think will happen next in stories.

Writing

Students have written persuasive and narrative texts.

In their persuasive texts, they have included high modality words like 'must', 'should', and 'definitely' to strengthen their arguments and opinions in their writing.

Students have practised using descriptive words to create wonderful narrative texts.  They have used their five senses detailing what they can see, hear, smell, taste, and feel in their imagined settings.

Maths

Students have been learning about place value.  Using visuals, hands-on materials and games, they have demonstrated their understanding of the value of each digit in whole numbers up to six digits long.  Students have also been introduced to decimal numbers.  Their confidence with place value is a great foundation and will help them with the more complex mathematical tasks that they will encounter during the remainder of this year.

Students have also been learning about reading analogue clocks and calculating elapsed time.  They used model clocks and online clocks to support them with their learning.

Inquiry

Students created a conservation campaign to raise awareness about an endangered animal that they have chosen.  They researched the animal’s habitat, threats, and the importance of protecting it.  Students designed impressive posters and digital campaigns.
