Learning and Teaching

A huge thank you to everyone who was able to attend the English Parent Information sessions last week. It was a great opportunity to share what is happening at St Louis' and how our programs reflect evidence based best practices. Links to recordings of the presentations have been sent out to all families via Operoo for those unable to attend.  If you have any question or feedback, please email Angela Healy (ahealy@stlouisaspendale.com) or your child's teacher. The links are also available below.

Prep - Year 2 English Information Presentation

Years 3-6 English Information Presentation

A few of the key ideas included the following -

We are applying an understanding of how the brain works and learns (cognitive science) to our classroom practices. This includes managing the limitations of working memory (cognitive load theory) and maximising opportunities to practice and retrieve knowledge.

We are using explicit instruction which involves a structured, sequential and teacher teacher led approach with lots of modelling, explanations and examples. We follow the 'I do, we do, you do' model with frequent checks for understanding.

We are also utilising full participation strategies to ensure every student actively participates in each lesson, frequently engaging, responding and having to think about the content.  We aim to avoid 'opting out' of the learning.

Ultimately, our goal is to ensure every student is achieving excellence with the Big 6 of reading, as well as in their writing.
