English

Students have attacked English with enthusiasm to begin the new school year. Of particular focus at Mater Dei has been Years 7, 8 and 11 engaging in the imaginative writing process, with a particular focus on examining how our use of language can be planned, drafted and edited in order to most accurately and succinctly create meaning in our writing. A key component of ensuring that students are focussing on their use of language is to create tasks that have them write part of a narrative, rather than a resolved story. This means that there is less reliance on plot and more of focus on description of character and setting.

Students looking to further develop their imaginative writing skills should take note of two external opportunities. First is a free writing workshop which will be run at the Wagga City Library during the school holidays (16th April from 12pm - 2.30pm) featuring local, award winning author Gabby Tozer. More details can be found here.

Another opportunity which has been advertised to students is the Insight Creative Writing Competition. Cash prizes are on offer, and we encourage students to use some of the work they have completed at school as a foundation to enter and refine their work.

We in the English department look forward to continuing working with students as we head into term 2 of 2025.
