Talk Money Workshops

I think we speak for the whole year level when we say we thoroughly enjoyed the Talk Money workshops and we can all proudly say that we learned a lot of new things that we will apply in our everyday lives.

The first workshop was on Tuesday 25th February 2025 ,and the second workshop was on Thursday  20th March 2025. Both workshops took place at Glen Eira college, it was a very respectful environment and we had so many amazing conversations. Our first workshop was run by the one and only Steven and our second workshop was with Karlis with a K! The most valuable thing we learnt about money was that do not save what is left after spending, but spend what is left after saving. All the things we learnt were important in so many different ways. We are so grateful to have been given the opportunity to attend the money talks.

The 2 workshops went during two of our classes on different days. Each workshop focused on one different money topic each. They took place in our PAC and the learning environment was focused on asking questions about each topic. Two people from “Talk Money” ran two workshops about how to use money wisely and how to save it. They talked about how buying unnecessary items would reduce how much money one would need to save for something they would want in the future. The most surprising thing was that they said if you save only two dollars a day then it would be $730 by the end of the year. This workshop was important because it would help know what you are doing with money and make wise decisions.

On 20th March 8E and 8F had the Talk Money workshop. We had it inside the Performing Arts Centre, the learning environment was not really crowded. We were directed by Karlis who was very nice and interacted with the audience a lot. We learnt about the various ways we can save money and learned how to set goals and find unnecessary things we spend money on every week. These lessons can help save money in the future when students earn money from part time jobs and learning these saving habits can help massively.

Reflection: On 20th March 8D participated in the Talk Money workshop in the PAC with 8C. First we entered the PAC and Karlis greeted us with a welcoming smile. We took our seats then he soon started acknowledging the traditional owners of the land and informed us that he wasn’t a money adviser meaning that he wasn’t able to tell us what and which brands to use our money with. We got to learn how to spend our money properly and responsibly. We learned that most of this information is important because it will help us in the future. Most of our money that we spend is for spending money with our friends and going out. Lots of people shared money hacks and one of them was that you could look for sales so you wouldn't spend too much money, or when the seasons change then stores are trying to get rid of stock so they’ll put the prices lower.

The workshops happened on 25th February period 1 and the 20th of March at period 2. They were run by two men named Steven and Karlis who talked about handling money and how to save it.

These workshops took place in the PAC, with an environment that would engage people and get them interested in the activity of handling and saving money.

Two men from the talk money workshops ran them and we learnt how to save and how to handle money carefully. The first man had taught us how to spend money wisely and how to buy useful things for good prices. The second man taught us how we can save money and spend it in a good way so that you can buy the same things but for better prices.

The most useful thing or surprising thing that we found about these workshops was that we can start saving money now, so that in the future, we can spend it wisely and pay off bills, rent, cars, supplies, etc.

This information that was important to me was how I learned about compound interest and how I could get extra money by putting money into a bank account and then saving it to buy something better later. These workshops teach children about learning to spend money wisely and to buy things with value so that you buy things at better prices.
