YEAR 8 VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS MURALS
In Visual Communications, our Year 8 students had to make a mural based on things they like, which was then put up in U-block and J-block.
During last semester, the students were asked to complete their murals in groups or by themselves. Here are Chloe and Mahi, some of our Year 8 students, on their experience with this creative project:
Mahi: I chose my topic of food because food can be quite colourful and I thought that would look nice in the art room area. I started by sketching a simple version of my design of a charcuterie board into my visual art book. Then I proceeded to sketch my design onto the wooden board/canvas. I painted the first layer of my design and once each layer dried, I added more until it became a solid colour. Afterwards, I added extra detail with paint markers and once I was finished I felt really happy to see it up in U-block.
Chloe: I chose to base my mural on my love of reading and books, so after a lot of planning I decided to paint a portrait of a girl reading. I sketched out my design on the canvas and painted down the base layers of the painting. After that, I added highlights and shading. Finally, I outlined the art in posca (paint pen), added detail to the book and continued to touch up the mistakes. Once I was happy with the finished product, I gave it to my teacher Miss Hill and I was really happy to see my painting up in the U-Block.

The Year 10 Athlete Development Academy Students are looking for your support!
Over the past few years, each Year 10 ADA class have chosen an issue within the community that they believe they can make a positive contribution to in some way. This year, our Student Athletes have decided to focus on animal welfare within the community and will be collaborating with the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in Burwood East.
They are organising a donation drive among the HGC community to collect blankets, towels, and other necessary items for the comfort and well-being of animals under the RSPCA’s care. They will be collecting these donations from the two main admin areas, (Main College Administration and the Primary Years Administration) every morning during Week 5 (12th - 16th August), with the hope that members of the Hazel Glen community may have goods to donate.
YEAR 6-8 MATHEMATICS EXTENSION PROGRAM
Each week we have some very dedicated students and staff meet at lunchtime on Mondays as part of the Mathematics Extension Program. This week, students participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition and enjoyed a visit from a guest speaker. Thank you to Mr. Montanaro, Ms. Andrews and Ms. Robertson for their coordination of the program.
