Year 5 Class News

Each newsletter, we ask a different teacher to share what their class has been learning. This week, our Year 5 reporters inform us of some of their learning in Year 5.

English and Art

By Christian

Our novel study in Term 2 was The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C S Lewis. We enjoyed reading the book and getting to know the characters. There was so much to learn, including lots and lots of new vocabulary, sentence and paragraph structure.

In Art, we each created a really fun Aslan portrait using oil pastels, chalk pastels and art liners to make a really cool picture.

We made some amazing wardrobes (also known as lapbooks) using a large piece of cardboard. Inside our wardrobes was where we glued and decorated cool paper flaps of paper that highlighted the story's main events, where we answered questions, reflected on the story and included some scripture references. We are looking forward to sharing these with our parents at our Student Led Conferences

Christian Education

By Isaac

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is full of links to Scripture. These are some of our favourites:

Lucy was drawn towards the light in the wardrobe. In John 8:12, who does the Bible say is the light of the world? Jesus is the light of the world.

In the story, Edmund’s greed gets the better of him when he finds out about the power he can have when he brings his siblings to Narnia. What does the Bible say about being cautious? Proverbs 23:1-3 says,

"Notice what is in front of you, don't be greedy, control yourself".

Dioramas

By Aliyah

In Novel Study, we read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. After we finished the book, Mrs Sarre asked us to choose our favourite scene and make a diorama of it. We worked every day, or most days, during our novel study time to make our dioramas. Once we finished our dioramas we wrote a little bit about our chosen scene. For our dioramas, we used all sorts of things such as clay, paint, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, cellophane, the hot glue gun, cotton buds, cardboard boxes and so much more.

Turkish Delight

By Emilie

We ate some Turkish Delight in one of the sessions of Novel Study because one of the characters, Edmond, had eaten some. In the story, the Turkish Delight was enchanted, to tempt Edmund to do things for the White Witch. Our Turkish Delight was of course, not enchanted. It was pink and had icing sugar on it and it looked like jelly. Its texture was squishy and powdery. We tried the original flavour, rosewater. Most of us thought it was delicious!

Pre-Service Teachers

Three of our classes are fortunate to have some amazing pre-service teachers in their classrooms for the first 8 weeks of this term. These pre-service teachers are doing their last placement in their final year of teaching studies before qualifying as teachers. Here is what our Year 5 students discovered about each of them.

Premier's Reading Challenge

I hope you all found a nice warm place to snuggle up with a good book, and remembered to add it to your recording sheet.

The Premier's Reading Challenge ends in the middle of this term, so you have about five weeks left to complete your recording sheet and return to either your classroom teacher or Mrs Spencer.

If you have any questions, please speak to your class teacher.

I look forward to receiving many record sheets in the next few weeks.
