Level 3: Connect

Claire Parsons 3A, Sarah Peters and Jess Steel 3B, Jenny Dare 3C

Welcome to Level 3, Term 2, 2025!

Weeks 9 and 10 saw the Level 3 students zoom along with their learning in all areas of the curriculum. These students have certainly achieved a tremendous amount in the first two terms of Level 3. Their endless energy and thirst for learning have certainly cemented

their academic standards which in turn has challenged most students to further increase their learning. This is wonderful to observe.

There will not be any further homework until the commencement of Term 3. However, please encourage your child to read every day as well as accessing the online learning such as Mathletics and Wushka. Also, please encourage your child to continue to practise their Times Tables especially the 3 x tables and 4 x tables.

NAIDOC Week which is a celebration of Indigenous Australians occurs in the first week of the school holidays (6 - 13 July 2025) hence your child will likely bring home some NAIDOC Week activities to complete.

Literacy

In Literacy we are continuing to learn about the Etymology of words which is the origin of how words were formed. We have been learning about the Latin word 'tract' which means pull.  We then explored how this word forms other words by adding prefixes and suffixes. For example, con + tract = contract and pro + tract + ing = protracting and at + tract = attract and at + tract + ion = attraction. There are many other words which we formed using 'zo' as the base word and adding various prefixes and suffixes.

Furthermore, we are continuing to learn about Homophones which are words that sound the same but have different spelling and different meanings. We are also completing a pictorial project about an aspect of nature 'noun' such as cave, river, leaf, tree, etc. The students are writing a 'personification' and a 'simile' about their chosen noun as well as three facts about their noun. Their completed pictorial project comprises the noun, the personification, the simile, the three facts as well as a detailed picture of their noun. Some students have taken a further step and written an acrostic poem about their chosen noun.

Maths

In Maths, we are continuing to learn about Equivalent Fractions as well as dividing groups and naming these divided groups as fractions. Equivalent fractions have the same value but look different. For example, 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 5/10 are equivalent fractions because they represent half of something. This concept can be difficult for the students to comprehend so the visual representation is ideal for teaching and learning.

The students are now revising and learning about clocks and telling the time to the o' clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to as well as  five minute intervals. For example, when the minute hand is on the number 2, the time is 10 minutes past the hour and when the minute hand is on the number 5, the time is 25 minutes past the hour.

The students are currently still learning the five minute intervals as this can be a challenge to learn due to the abstract nature of time.

Inquiry

In Inquiry (Geography), the Level 3 students are now finalising their individual ERPs for Term 2. They have chosen their own sustainability 'problem' and are working on an invention to manage or resolve the 'problem'. The ERPs will comprise of the following which the students will present in the Level 3 Term 2 Expo:

  • Completion of a paper-based workbook comprising written descriptions and labelled diagrams of an invention concerning their own view of sustainability in the environment.
  • A Power Point Presentation comprising the above.
  • A practical build of their invention i.e diorama, small box construction...

GEM Chat - In the classroom, we have been discussing empathy and what a person might look like when they are experiencing a range of emotions.
