Foundation: Connect

Term 1 2025

Library Times

0A, 0B, 0C - Friday 1pm

In order to borrow a book students must return their 'old' library book (preferably on their library day) and bring a library bag.

Please keep returning the take home books that are given for home reading. Please return every Monday as we rely on getting them back to give to another class and other students. Thank-you for your understanding.

Every Friday we are alternating between SEPS Academy and Communities

Last day of Term 2: Friday 4th July 2:30pm

Learning

Numeracy

We have been learning how to share items fairly through real life situations. Students were given the challenge of sharing sandwiches amongst guests at a birthday party so that they were distributed fairly. Using real life scenarios is a great way to show children how we can link maths to the world around us.

We have been learning how to describe the position of familiar objects using words such as inside, underneath, top or bottom. Locational language is important to learn as it builds spatial awareness. Words like ‘above, below, next to and behind help students make sense of where things are and can be used when following directions or reading maps or diagrams.

Our Foundation students have been busy learning all about the 'teen numbers'. By using 2 Tens Frames, they were asked to represent the teen number that they were given on a card such as the number 15.

Literacy

In Week 10 we have been looking at '-tch' as in witch. The rule is we use '-tch' after a short vowel in a short word; such as 'switch, fetch, patch' etc. We are still reviewing 'nk, ng' and 'ck'.

We are working on sentence structure in our writing. Specifically, we are focusing on the 'when' in the sentence. We are also learning to make our sentences more interesting and vivid by adding in adjectives.

This week we have been learning the heart word 'said'.

Reading Fluency Passage 'Chad's Big Trip': Encourage your child to read the passage aloud daily, focusing on accuracy, expression, and pacing.

Fluency Tip: After your child segments and blends individual words, please encourage them to reread the entire sentence smoothly. This practise helps build confidence and supports the development of natural reading fluency. These materials are excellent tools to reinforce the phonics skills we're working on in class.

Optional challenge: circle heart words on the passage, put a square around the vowels, colour in the full stops, and highlight the capital letters!

Thanks for all your support.
