Retrieval Practice

Part of the Explicit Teaching model is the strategy of retrieval practice. This is the process where the focus is on students getting information out of the memory. The act of retrieval requires students to recall information that is currently in long term memory, but may still be challenging to recall. Each time it is recalled, pathways in the brain become stronger and new connections are formed. This process then makes it easier for students to recall this information in the future and apply it to new contexts. It also helps students retain learning and add complexity to their existing skills knowledge and understanding.
