We will not be assigning a homework matrix for the holidays, however we have included a matrix of Naidoc Week based activities for students to enjoy over the break. The Naidoc Week  theme for 2025 is The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy. We encourage families to use this time as an opportunity to discuss this years Naidoc theme and unpack the significance of Naidoc Week. Please be mindful that students have completed some of these tasks in Week 11 of Term 2.

Inquiry Excursion: Beach Walk with Wilko

The Level 4 students were fortunate enough to join Wilko on a historical walk down to Black Rock Beach. We started our journey wandering down Bluff road, learning about the importance of the curved roads to allow for horse-drawn trams and the changes that have occurred in our local community.

When we arrived at Black Rock beach, we engaged in history based activities to analyse the changes and importance in the area. We looked at the evolution of the landscape and buildings, and learnt about the sinking of the Cerberus in the bay. We continued our journey to find an exciting discovery carved in the beach wall bricks as Wilko shared his extensive knowledge of the Bayside history. We finalised our excursion with a bus ride back to school, driving along the old tram route. The students were full of wonderings and questions for Wilko throughout the day, and enjoyed the day full of new learning out in our beautiful local area.

Inquiry

As Term 2 comes to a wrap, the Level 4 students have been creating their information booklets full of their research information about a chosen commemoration or celebration. It has been joyful to watch how each student has brought their projects to live. With a mix of creative perspectives, students have been constructing detailed, descriptive booklets that help encapsulate their understanding of their research project.

Literacy

In our Literacy lessons, the Level 4 students have been analysing the text 'Storm Boy' by Colin Theile, focusing particularly on how we can interpret meaning from a text and unpack the purpose of the novel. By evaluating the structures, language features, and word choice in the text, we have been looking at how we can use these strategies to strengthen our own writing pieces.

Our specific writing focus looks at information reports. The Level 4 students have began to research a chosen Australian Animal, and have been practising efficient note taking to use in their information report. As we unpack how vocabulary can hook the readers attention, the Level 4 students will be constructing their information reports, transforming their researched information into structured paragraphs to create an engaging, informative writing pieces about their chosen animal.

Core Literacy:

Students have been reviewing and learning more about the 'y to i' rule:

  • When a word ends in "y" and you want to add an ending like -ed, -er, or -es, change the "y" to "i" — but only if there's a consonant before the "y".
  • Examples include:
    • crycried
    • carrycarries
    • happyhappier

BUT......

If there’s a vowel before the "y", keep the y.

  • playplayed (not plaied)
  • enjoyenjoyed

As students approach the final week of term 2, there will be a number of review lessons and multiple chances for application of the skills they have learnt throughout the semester.

Numeracy:

This fortnight in Numeracy, our Level 4 students have been applying their mental and written strategies to solve more complex division problems, including those with three- and four-digit numbers. They are learning to work through worded problems, explain their thinking, and interpret remainders in meaningful ways. Students have also been exploring fact families, rewriting addition equations as subtractions, and identifying unknown values using various strategies. With a focus on flexibility in problem solving, they are learning to select and justify the most efficient strategies for solving both addition and subtraction equations.
