Phonics
This term in Phonics, students have been continuing to build their early reading and spelling skills by learning a range of new letter sounds linked to our Scope and Sequence. They practised identifying these sounds at the beginning and end of words, as well as blending them to read simple words. A focus on medial vowel sounds helped students recognise how vowels work in the middle of words, which is an important step in decoding. Students were also introduced to digraphs, two letters that make one sound. Through games, songs, and word work, students are developing strong foundations for reading and writing.
Reading
In Reading, students have been developing their comprehension skills by focusing on two key strategies: Questioning and Making Connections. These strategies help students think more deeply about the texts they read and engage with the content in meaningful ways. In addition to comprehension, there has also been a strong emphasis on decoding words, a critical step in becoming fluent readers.
Writing
This term in Writing, the Preps have been learning to write Recounts and letters to our weekly Very Important Person (VIP). They’ve particularly enjoyed writing about their weekend adventures each week and reflecting on the fun they had during the FOOST incursion. Along the way, students have been developing their understanding of sentence structure and learning to use simple punctuation, including capital letters and full stops. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence grow as young writers!
Maths
This term in Maths, students have been building their skills and confidence across a range of important topics. They explored addition and subtraction through hands-on activities and number stories, helping them to understand how numbers work together. There was a strong focus on developing number sense, including counting, number recognition, and understanding the value of numbers. Students also enjoyed discovering and creating patterns, using colours, shapes, and objects to predict what comes next. They learned to identify and describe 2D shapes, exploring their features such as sides and corners through sorting and shape hunts around the classroom.
Thematic
This term, students have been learning about healthy food choices and the importance of healthy eating habits. They explored the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, learning to identify the five food groups and understand how each contributes to a balanced diet. Through class discussions and activities, students discovered how making nutritious food choices helps them feel strong, focused, and ready to learn. They also learned to recognise sometimes foods and why these should only be eaten in moderation.
