Physical Education

What a term we have had!!!

Physical Education has been a mix between individual competitions such as cross country and competitive team sports for the Level 5/6s at interschool sport. Our House Cross Country event enabled Level 3-6 students to qualify for the district event held at Ruffey Lake Park on May 23rd. The 58 students who attended on the day performed particularly well, placing Doncaster Primary 4th out of 8 schools in the district. The results on the day were outstanding and saw 11 students qualify for the Division cross country event which was held at Yarra Glen Racecourse in cold, wet, wintery conditions. Well done to Bella and Rachel from Level 4, Maya, Fletcher and Anya from Level 5 and Max, Eugene, Stephen, Lochie, Alex and Leila from Level 6 who all qualified for the division stage. A special mention to Fletcher who finished 12th and progressed to Regionals where he finished 72nd against some of the state’s best runners. The Level 5 and 6 students have developed the skills, game strategy and rules required for the winter interschool sport of T- Ball, soccer, AFL 9s, netball and volleyball.

Prep - 2

The Prep – 2 students have been developing their jump rope skills to be able to place their names on the ’10 Club’, ‘30 Club’ and ‘50 Club’ posters for consecutive skips. This has been a great motivator for students and seen lots of additional practice at home and in the playground at recess and lunch time. The preps have also been learning the skills of basketball including passing, dribbling and shooting. The Level 1and 2 students have been learning how to throw and catch a frisbee using the crocodile and crab catching techniques as well as learning how to play netball. They have focussed on their footwork which sees both sports require them to stop and pass as soon as they catch the ball or frisbee.

Level 3

The Level 3 students have developed their hand eye coordination for catching, fielding and striking for games such as rounders and cricket. They have also practised underarm pitching for rounders and attempted the correct overarm bowling technique required for cricket.

Level 4

Bike Education for Level 4 has been an amazing opportunity for the many non -riders to develop their confidence and ride a 2 wheeled bike independently. The confidence gained through this program is immeasurable and with a range of skills to enable the students to ride around Ruffey Lake Park and back at the conclusion of the program. Students have learned how to identify different components on a bike, change gears, perform an emergency brake, tight turns, hand signals, straight line riding and standing on the pedals to move over obstacles.
