Dear Families,
As we approach the halfway point of the school year, it's remarkable to reflect on just how much we've accomplished. From the School Picnic and Year 6 Camp to Confirmation, Mothers’ Morning, and our Friday Morning assemblies, not to mention the rich and varied classroom learning that has taken place since we began in early February. In so many different ways, each of our students has grown and developed.
Semester One school reports are released today via the SIMON Parent Access Module. Regardless of where your child’s academic results sit, I would encourage you to focus as much on progress that has been made as the performance that has been achieved. The excerpt below from The Conversation (Dec 12 2024) is a useful summary.
Regardless of how well your child is performing, ask the teacher if – in their view – your child is making an expected or acceptable level of progress, and what evidence tells them this.
Progress is different to performance – it indicates the growth your child is making in their learning over time, regardless of their starting point and regardless of their grades. It is the difference in knowledge, skill, sophistication or proficiency a child could previously demonstrate versus what they can demonstrate now.
While performance has traditionally been the focus of student reports, it is important to understand if your child is making progress in their learning. This ensures they are developing in their skills and knowledge and being appropriately challenged to meet their potential. |
With the various illnesses circulating in our community at the moment, a two week circuit breaker is timely indeed. Eleven week school terms are a bit like Essendon premierships - something only found in the long lost past! I hope the two week break from school allows all our students and their families to recover health and recharge batteries. Term Three (only 9 weeks in length) should fly by, aided by the promise of better weather.
