Primary School

Last Friday, we enjoyed an entertaining recount of Year Five camp as part of their assembly item; do not let the truth get in the way of a good story! Thank you, Mr Davison, for guiding the Year Five D class to produce a great display of their camp experience whilst keeping the audience well entertained and intrigued. We also presented our medallions and shield for the Whole School Interhouse Athletics Carnival. Well done to our House Shield winners: Camfield, with Wilson second, Mokare third and Baudin fourth.

Well done to our individual medalists below.

Classroom News

We hope you enjoy reading the news from our Early Childhood and Primary classes.

Kindergarten

This week in Kindergarten, we made a fire to cook our very own damper! This was just like in the story of The Little Red Hen. First, we had to learn about fire safety and then make the fire. Next, we ground some wheat to see that it makes flour. We then worked together to mix more ingredients into the dough before putting it on the fire pit to cook on the hot coals. Finally, we got to eat the yummy bread with the butter that we made last week. It was such a fabulous process, and the children loved being Little Red Hens.

Pre-Primary

Spontaneous play in Pre-Primary is very important and very exciting! We know that children learn through play and we intentionally set up play spaces in the classroom to allow children to further develop skills and understanding. This term we have been loving our ‘Daycare Centre’ and the ‘Farm’ small-world play in the classroom. But on Monday, we suddenly discovered we could make our hats into cowboy hats! We spent lunch time riding the ponies, rustling cattle and ‘yehawing’. We had so much fun!

Year One

The Year One students have caught the story bug! They have been learning to write five-sentence stories and are doing an amazing job. They started with the whole-class fabricated text about Jason the Cassowary and then took off with their own inventive and imaginative texts. In fact, they are so inspired that many of the class are writing their own stories and bringing them in on a daily basis! Mathematically, a range of concepts have been explored this week, ranging from graph work to turnaround sums and months of the year.

Year Two

The Year Two class was very excited this week to finally choose their ingredients and write up their procedural texts to make their own ‘marvellous mixtures’. They must have been excited to do this as their writing was SO NEAT! Our motto of ‘Tidy Term Two’ is really starting to make a difference. There are some weird and wonderful ingredients and we look forward to making them next week. On Wednesday we were also lucky enough to head up to the Science labs with Dr Mitrovski where he introduced us to the wonderful world of Secondary School science experiments, even including making elephant toothpaste! Thank you, Dr Mitrovski, for a wonderful afternoon; we appreciate the time you took out of your busy schedule to teach us about mixtures and solutions.

Year Four

The Year Four class has been learning about Civics and Citizenship in Humanities lessons this week and is preparing for an inquiry into the services and facilities the local council provides for us. They have discovered that the range of things the City of Albany does for the community is pretty amazing and they are revving up their inquiry skills to discover more. We are very lucky to have Mrs Julianne Dwyer-Adams, a TAFE student Education Assistant who is getting some practical experience, in our class for two weeks so we are making the most of having an extra adult in the class!

Year Five

This week the Year Five students have been experimenting with different acids mixed with bicarbonate soda, to see the different properties of gases for Science, which finishes their unit on States of Matter. We also started our class model for our inquiry project. This involved using butterflies that tessellated to trace on plastic milk bottles, to cut out and make cabbage moths. When placed near a brassica, these fake butterflies can discourage live ones from settling and laying their eggs. The process used for this activity allows the students the skills to make their own creations using plastic items that are not often recycled. They have also been polishing their narratives by editing one another's work.

Year Six

Last Friday, our Year Six students showcased their leadership and teamwork by planning and running an exciting House Quiz for students across Years One to Six. The four Houses were mixed into teams with students from each year level and spread across different rooms, creating a wonderful atmosphere of collaboration and School spirit. It was fantastic to see students working together across year levels, cheering each other on, and embracing the challenge with enthusiasm. A huge congratulations to all involved, especially Year Six for their organisation, creativity and confident hosting. A special congratulations to Camfield, who claimed a narrow victory in a tightly contested finish. Well done, everyone, for making it such a memorable afternoon!

Languages

While our Early Childhood students have been having fun consolidating their learning of French family words and numbers through games and playful activities, our Middle Primary students have launched into their inquiry: Why should we learn a new language? Their initial brainstorm about what they already know about languages was incredibly thoughtful and wide-ranging. From there, we explored real-life situations where speaking another language could be helpful. Meanwhile, our Upper Primary students have begun reflecting on L’image du Français, the image of the French language. At first, many of their ideas were focused solely on France, but after watching an engaging video, they were surprised to learn that French is an official language in 29 countries around the world! These newly acquired French-speaking skills may be more useful than they originally thought!
