 Keep Moving, Stay Well

As the winter holidays arrive, it’s natural to want to slow down and unwind. While rest is important, staying physically active - even in small ways - is just as crucial for maintaining mental health and emotional wellbeing during the colder months.

Even in winter, regular movement can:

  • Lift your mood – Exercise triggers the release of feel-good endorphins that help combat stress, anxiety, and low mood.

  • Improve sleep – Physical activity supports better, more restful sleep, which is especially important when daylight hours are shorter, and energy levels can dip.

  • Support learning – Physical activity clears the mind and can improve memory and concentration — a helpful boost before heading into Term 3.

  • Strengthen social connections – Whether it’s a casual walk with friends or family, exercise helps keep us connected.

  • Build healthy habits – Establishing a simple exercise routine now can help set you up for the rest of the year.

Simple Ways to Stay Active This Winter

  1. Move every day (even just a little)

A 20-minute walk, dancing in your room, or stretching during your favourite show all count. Movement doesn’t have to be intense to make a difference.

  2. Make it fun

Choose activities you enjoy – whether it’s a casual game of basketball, bike rides, or following a workout on YouTube. The more you enjoy it, the more likely you are to stick with it.

  3. Get outdoors when you can

Fresh air and natural light are good for the body and mind. Rug up, grab a friend or your dog, and head out for a short walk.

  4. Limit long screen time sessions

Set timers or take movement breaks if you're gaming or streaming. Try standing up, stretching, or walking around the house during episodes or levels.

  5. Move together

Involve your family or friends. Plan a hike, try a winter sport, or have a dance-off in the lounge room - whatever gets everyone moving.

By keeping movement in our routines over the break, we support not just our physical health, but our emotional and mental wellbeing too.

Wishing all our students and families a safe, healthy, and happy break.
