Music Matters

A Great Start to 2026
It’s been a vibrant and energetic start to the year in the Music Centre, with students already filling the space with rehearsals, practice and performance. Our 75-piece Huntingtower Symphony Orchestra set the tone before the Commencement Assembly with a focused early rehearsal, establishing a wonderful standard of musicianship and commitment that has flowed through all our ensembles. It’s been a joy to see students reconnect with their music-making so quickly.
If your child is not yet involved in a school ensemble but would like to be, we warmly encourage them to get in touch. There is an ensemble to suit every stage of musical development, and we are always happy to help students find the best fit based on their experience and interests. Students can visit Mr Mowat in the Music Centre or contact us at music@huntingtower.vic.edu.au for guidance on ensembles, rehearsal times and opportunities.
We are also continuing to welcome new enrolments for Private Music Tuition. Learning an instrument or voice through regular lessons offers students a wide range of benefits: improved confidence, discipline, creativity and collaboration, as well as the simple enjoyment of making music. Research has shown that learning a musical instrument leads to improvements in all academic subjects.

Concerts and Performances
Our first public performance for the year will be the much-loved Autumn Twilight Concert on the late afternoon and evening of Wednesday 1 April. This relaxed outdoor event is always a highlight of Term 1, and we look forward to sharing more details soon.
In Term 2, our concert program will take a slightly different shape. The Junior School and Middle School (Intermezzo) ensembles will perform in the Winter Concert at the PAC on the evening of Tuesday 16 June. Our senior ensembles will instead present a series of Open Rehearsal recording sessions during their regular rehearsal times in Week 6 of Term 2. Parents, relatives and friends will be invited to attend and observe the rehearsal and recording process. These recordings will then be shared with the wider community. This format allows us to maintain performance opportunities while accommodating a particularly busy term that includes House Performing Arts events and academic exams.
2027 European Music Tour
Planning is underway for our 2027 European Music Tour, scheduled for June–July 2027. An information meeting was held recently outlining the proposed itinerary, which includes performances in the Northern Lakes region of Italy and the Provence area of France. These tours run every two years and provide an incredibly rewarding musical and cultural experience for participating students.
If you were unable to attend the meeting and would like further information, please email music@huntingtower.vic.edu.au. Nominations close on Friday 20 February, with places to be confirmed in early March following the selection process outlined in the tour booklet.
