Year 5 & 6
Around our level
This week in our classrooms we have focused on collecting ideas for our writing. Instead of staring at a blank page and wondering what to say, we learned that writers are always gathering inspiration from the world around them. To help us do this, we began building our very own “Writers Notebooks” - special places where we can store thoughts, observations, memories, and sparks of imagination.
One of our main activities this week was creating a list of nouns. At first, that might sound simple - just people, places, and things - but we quickly discovered how powerful nouns can be. A single word, like “river,” “grandmother,” “thunder,” or “key”, can unlock an entire story. Each student chose nouns that felt interesting, meaningful, or mysterious to them. Some students selected everyday objects, like “backpack” or “kitchen", while others chose more unusual words, like “galaxy” or “shadow".
After building our lists, we used them as jumping-off points for creative writing. The only rule was to let our imaginations take the lead. A noun didn’t have to stay ordinary. A “door” could become a portal to another world. A “tree” could whisper secrets. A “clock” could tick backward in time. By focusing on just one word, we practiced stretching our ideas and thinking deeply about what stories might be hidden inside it.
We also talked about how professional writers collect ideas. Authors don’t just wait for inspiration to strike - they pay attention. They notice small details, interesting conversations, and strong feelings. This week, students practiced being observers. They wrote about memories connected to their nouns, described them using vivid sensory details, and even asked questions about them. What does it sound like? What does it remind you of? Why does it matter?
The results have been fantastic. Some students wrote personal narratives inspired by family members. Others created imaginative fantasy worlds from a single simple object. Many students surprised themselves by discovering that once they started writing, ideas kept flowing.
Most importantly, we learned that writing doesn’t always begin with a full plan. Sometimes it begins with one small word. By collecting nouns and exploring them creatively, we are building a toolbox of ideas that we can return to throughout the year. Whenever we feel stuck, we can open our Writers Notebooks and find inspiration waiting for us.
Our Writers Notebooks are already becoming treasured spaces filled with imagination. We look forward to continuing to grow our ideas, develop our voices, and turn simple words into powerful stories.

Christmas - Jye C
It was Christmas Eve and I was so excited. I could not wait till the morning! My mum then shouted "don’t forget to put the cookies and milk out for santa!’’ I sprinted to the kitchen and grabbed a cookie and a glass of milk and put them on the table. I then went to bed. But I was curious if Santa Claus was real or not. So I stayed up till midnight.
Suddenly I heard a "BANG!’’. It was Santa Claus coming down the chimney! I peaked my head out my door. "It was Santa!’’ I said "hi’’, quietly so I don’t wake up my parents. "Can I help?" I asked. YOU SHOULD BE ASLEEP!!! Shouted santa. "Please can I help’’. Santa said "Fine’’. So we dashed to all the houses around the world delivering presents. Finally we got back to our house. "Thanks Santa BYE!’’
Porsche - Noah F
Porsche is nice
Not as good as rice
You can drift
And make it look swift
It’s so comfy
And never bumpy
When you drive
You can win money by racing
And when you see one
Your heart will increase its pacing.
The space disaster - Raghav S
In just two minutes we were going to make history. We were going to be the first people to land on Jupiter.
CRASH! “What happened?” asked the commander
The engineer took a good look outside. “Oh no! An asteroid has made a hole in our fuel tank!” cried the engineer. REE! The engines stopped working.
CRASH! Another asteroid hit the spacecraft. “We should get out of here!” Said the commander. So they quickly put on their spacesuits and came outside. “Okay guys what do we do?” asked the main astronaut. But they were gone!
“Guys this isn’t funny!” RWEE! The next thing that happened was that a powerful suction force was making him get pulled up. He looked up, there was a gigantic U.F.O! “Help!” He screamed. It was no use, there wasn’t going to be any humans for billions and billions of miles away. He suddenly went WHOOSH! Up the U.F.O. And it flew far away into the galaxy.

Nasa’s spacecraft that was supposed to be a celebration turned into a nightmare when the spacecraft went missing last night! The last thing we heard from the astronauts was “HELP!” Are our astronauts ok? The spaceship took a photo of the engineer and the commander getting pulled up by a weird circle thing!
Where are these people? And what will they do next?
Five Nights at Freddy's - Jamie G
Five Nights at Freddy’s is a franchise with over a decade's worth of content, spanning from games, to books, to now even two movies, it’s one of the biggest fandoms in the world!(and it shows) But what is Five Nights at Freddy’s? And how did it come to be? What’s the lore behind it? Ect ect... On the 8th of August, 2014, Scott Cawthon and Steel wool teamed up to make ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ a survival horror game where you’re a night guard at a kids pizzeria with animatronics that are trying to kill you throughout the night, close doors, check cams, do anything to keep you alive, while keeping your battery percentage above 0%. Anyway, as soon as the game was released, people LOVED IT, but they wanted to know the story behind it? Why did the animatronics want to kill you? So Scott and Steel wool gave us one of the best laws ever made...

10 days ago… - Jai F
Yawn… good morning. Wait, why is it cold and dark and so quiet? I plugged in my phone and waited. Beep… beeeep… beep. National Warning Alert.
WHAT? Why do I need to evacuate? I thought. Then I moved the phone with my mind, not realising I had just done that.
I looked out the window and saw a HAZMAT truck and people with the words “SCP Containment” on their uniforms. Oh no! I thought, starting to shiver and worry about why they were outside. Then I began to read the message again.
Ahhhh… my head was in so much pain that everything went black… and I felt relieved. But then I looked around and realised I had teleported into a pitch-black room.
I must be going crazy. I MUST BE… but then I heard a buzz, then a bang, then an announcement:
“Sector 3 lockdown. Tactical team, move in.”
I saw a light, then another — it was blinding. After a minute, it was normal again, and I was relieved to see I was in a room with a window.
And I was being watched. Observed. THEY THOUGHT I WAS AN SCP.
Then I felt cold goosebumps go down my back. I turned and saw stairs that seemed to go down forever…
Crack… static… “Hello? Do you hear me?”
I heard it from my pocket — but there was nothing there.
It was a superpower, they said. You can hear anyone who has the same power.
Wow, I thought.
The Power Kids - Aubree B
Hi, I'm Ellie, short for Ellieana. My favourite things are my four best friends Sienna, Mike, Max and Grace and of course me too. Today we are going to go to the summer power lab. We are going to sneak in. We told our parents we are going to the shops.
"It is time to go," says Ellie.
"Ok, we're coming, let's go. Ok, hey Ellie," said Max.
"Yess Max, how are we going to get there?"
"Of course we are going to ride my electric bike. I have five of them. Mine is pink, Grace is purple, Max is orange and Sienna's is blue. Here are your helmets. Let’s go!"
"Woohoo, we are five minutes away. Ok, we are here. Hmm, what is that? It looks like a cool drink? Well, I'm thirsty and there are five of them, we can each have one."
"Ohh ok, I want the pink one.”“I will have purple.” “I want green!”“I want blue!
Gulp… gulp… gulp… gulp… gulp… hmmm what is happening? Oh no, it was a super power drink!!!!!!!!! Ohh I kind of like it though.
Let's go to the footy oval and see what powers we have…
"Ok, we're here. Wow, I can fly," said Ellie.
"I have laser eyes," said Sienna.
"And I can move things! Look, I can lift your bike, it is floating!".
Mint Man - Cruze F
NEE-NAW! NEE-NAW! Sirens blared through the city as Bully Bottom ran through the line of police cars. CRASH! Police cars went s p i n n i n g through the air! What were we going to do? Wait! It’s, it’s, it’s — MINT MAN!
Here in Wellbourne City, Bully Bottom was a crazy supervillain with long red pants and spikes on his bottom. He is like a bull- don’t get in his way or he might squash you! Our superhero is the one, the only, MINT MAN! He has a green mask and green cap with the ability to fly! His name is Mint Man because he uses a giant mint toothpaste tub as a flamethrower! Bully Bottom may be strong, but he is no match for Mint Man!
Mint Man watched as Bully Bottom ran through the streets of Wellbourne. He sat perched on an old clock tower.
“Ahh! Mint Man, come and save us!” yelled the people of the city.
Mint Man was not afraid. Mint Man jumped from the clock tower, falling hundreds of feet to the ground! Right before he hit the ground, he started flying in the air!
“Do not fear! Mint Man is here!” he said heroically.
“Mint Man’s here to save us!” cheered the civilians of Wellbourne.
Mint Man flew towards Bully Bottom.
“Huh?” said Bully Bottom as he turned around to see Mint Man torpedoing towards him.
CRASH! Bully Bottom was defeated!
Superpowers! - Karleigh W
In a far away village, elves had powers, like elemental magic. Some had earth, aka nature, some water, some fire, and some with air manipulation. Some elves even had enormous dragons for pets, and these weren’t any dragons, they were DANGEROUS dragons. The biggest and rarest and most dangerous was the Greek Dragon. They had dark magic, so dark that even no power could destroy it. Until they mysteriously disappeared, no one had ever seen them again…
One day, an elf girl with nature powers was in the dark forest, which was forbidden, but she had to go in for special ingredients for her mother’s special pot stew. As she was picking some berries and herbs, she saw something BIG and shimmering black that looked like the night sky. She went over cautiously, afraid to awaken it. As she moved some branches away quietly with her nature manipulation power, the vines and branches revealed… the Greek Dragon.
She was stunned by its shimmering black scales. She had never seen something so beautiful, yet dangerous, a creature that resembled the night sky. She moved over more cautiously but with subtle curiosity, trying her best not to awaken it. As she got closer, she accidentally stepped on a twig, making it crack. The dragon woke. It slowly turned to her. Just as the girl was about to scream in terror and fright, she heard her mother calling out to her.
“Alice! Time to come back now!”.
