Outreach Program Visit...

University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Engineers Without Borders (EWB) outreach program attended the College on Monday 17th June to work with Year 9, 10 and 11 students to develop their engineering skills and knowledge. This initiative aims to provide school students the opportunity to work with university mentors to address humanitarian issues through engineering. A sample outline of the real world problems students will be working on are below:

  • Appropriate Housing - focuses on civil engineering and the application of buoyancy to construct a simulation model for the floating houses on the Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia.
  • Prosthetic Limb- focusing on biomedical engineering, this module challenges students to create a prosthetic limb under time and resource limitations. Students then perform tasks to show how engineering can make a significant difference in the lives of individuals physically affected by uncontrollable events like wars or birth defects.
  • Renewable Wind - focuses on electrical and renewable/environmental engineering as students design and create a simulation wind turbine that maximises energy generation. Students also learn about different forms of renewable energy and the real-world application of wind energy.

Engineers Without Borders is a national and international organisation that works to improve the lives of people through engineering. This outreach program provides comprehensive real world project briefs for school students to apply their creative thinking skills in the development of their solutions. Students were thoroughly engaged in the hands-on challenges and loved testing their engineering skills when they had to present their final designs to the group.
